What is a better base and ring set up.  The one piece Talley lightweights or Talley bases and fixed rings.  Also, is there a difference between rings that join together vertically and rings that join horizontally?

As far as better, the steel bases are rings are favorable over aluminum reingmounts.  But both are just as good. There is no advantages or disadvantage between the vertical or horizontal joined rings.  Both are just as sturdy and accurate.  I do know that Talley recommends the Vertical rings.  If I had to choose I would go with the steel bases and rings.  You can't go wrong with that set up.  Hope this info helps!  Also here is Talley's # if you need to talk to them about it.  1-803-854-5700....

I like a Picatinney rail for most all my stuff.

More options, mostly.

Mary gave you good advise.

Split horizontal rings are a bit easier to install.

Talleys are real good rings. But I have only used the steel ones.

Thanks!  Any opinions on the Talley rings vs. the Burris Signature rings?

Well, you have two companies that offer two excellent ring systems.

Buris Signature Rings are Steel and they come with Plastic inserts that are made of a dimensionally-stable synthetic material.  That means that insert keeps the scope from being scratched from the ring and leaving definate ring marks.  The perks with the Signature rings are that no matter how many times you change the scope out you still have a scope that looks good as new every time. The scope and ring contact become virtually 100%, perfect fit.

Now with Talley, they are manufactured to have a 100% contact hold around the scope also.  Now they do not have inserts.

Now no matter which rings that you use, even the Signature rings, there will always be a mark of some sort where the rings were.  Some are more noticiable and the Signatures are the ones that have a least amount of mark left on the scope.  The Signature don't leave scratch, but you may see a slight line where it was.

I hope this helps.

Mary
