I went to the Burris Site and found this ...

Posi-Lock®
Not only does every Burris scope include twice as much spring force as most scopes, we developed the patented Posi-Lock to lock your adjustments in once-and-for-all.

What exactly does it lock in?  If you lock in the reticle then how do you use the target knobs to move things .... excuse my ignorance .... I don't know a heck of allot about these things ... YET

I found this digging around the Burris Site

Posi-Lock replaces the springs with a retractable steel post. It locks the inner tube, and your accuracy, firmly in place. You get accuracy and dependability you can't find anywhere else. Posi-Lock is the best accuracy insurance money can buy. A simple turn of the key unlocks Posi-Lock, letting you make precision windage and elevation adjustments. When you tighten it back down the scope is locked on target. And it stays there. no matter what.

So, the answer is YES ... you have to loosen it before adjusting for wind or elevation .... it is intended for rifles that KICK HARD .... my plans are for a .22-250 ... certainly not an extra step that I would want to do (or need)

Same concept as an IOR with it's Magnum Lock Support, only it's preset at the factory and should not be fooled with.

It's designed to "lock" the reticle in place and keep a high recoil rifle from knocking it loose.

The burris posi-lok came about the same time as the Weaver t-4. In those days scopes didn't have good repeatablity and the recticle were held in place by leaf or finger type springs. Thus the reticle harness was only held at three points, Later the T-4 used coil springs and a ball bearing which was a better set up. I have never had repeatability problems from Leo, Nikon and Zeiss, unless the scope was bad in the beginning even with heavys. To me a scope that needs a Posi-lok type setup makes me what is wrong to start with that this is the cure for.
