Hey guys, first post.  I found thist site from THR and the HIDE. so here's my problem, to many options.

Im running circles between what scope to go with.

Originally I was going with a falcon menace 4-14X44 ffp in the mil/mil configuration. Then I noticed the new weaver tactical 3-15X50, FFP no info on the turrets (mil - 1/4 moa). Then I got a look at this post over on the hide http://www.snipershide.com/forum/ubb...1191777&page=1 down around 3/4 of the way, thats some pretty sharp glass to me.  Lastly is the IOR 2.5-10X42 30mm FFP Ilum. MP8.  I have got some bad reports of the IOR FFP, but supposedly its confined to the 3-18 models.  But it has mil adjustments.

The gun is an AR that Im going to use in a DM role and possibly some paper punching out to 500 yds.

I know the 3x9 would get me out to 500 yds (might have some problems with paper at 500 yds with only x9) and no side focus (looses tactCOOL points)

The weaver has the low end x3 and high end x15 and the side focus (if even a purely ascetic thing) but no info on the turrets still. I think the glass would be good.

The falcon has everything, but Im wondering about the glass quality and tracking of adjustments.  Being its the cheapest of the bunch, Im just worried about it being any good.

The IOR is top dog in this group (although every time I read something about the SS 3x9 that race just gets a little closer, dang that side focus).  It has mil turrets, but isnt the MP-8 ret. a MOA based ret?

So what do you think?

The lack of a side focus (just a personal thing) and the power (9 as the top end) are whats keeping my from ordering one.  What about one in 3-12 with a SF?

That IOR is not one of their FFPs.  Only the 3-18x or the 2.5-10x are available in FFP.

I saw a Falcon go through a 4 day precision rifle class.  It passed the box test fine and the glass seemed good when I looked through it.  It was all daylight shooting though.

For the money, you can't really beat the Variable Super Sniper.  As for the side focus, I do not feel hampered by it in any way.  In a scope of moderate magnification, I do nto think that is a concern.  Just for the record, IOR 2.5-10x42FFP does not have side focus either.

I have owned the IOR 2.5-10x42 in the past and it is a very nice scope with a nice reticle.  I currently have a SnipersHide edition of IOR 3-18x42FFP and I am very happy with it.

I have never played with a Falcon FFP scope, so I do not have an opinion on that.

With all that having been said, unless you need a lot of magnification, I think Variable Super Sniper 3-9x42 is the way to go.

Just a thought but your comment about paper at 500yds and 9x not being enough. If you can see your paper target at 56yds ok without any magnification then you should be ok with 9x. Since you will have the same size target at 500yds with 9x.

New Trijicon 5-20x50 Accu-Point 30mm Rifle Scope
Stock # - TR232G
  • Matte
  • Mil-Dot Crosshair w/ Green Dot
  • 30mm
$1,019.95
Add New Trijicon 5-20x50 Accu-Point 30mm Rifle Scope to Cart
Well it's not FFP but it is quite a nice scope and even though it only has 50moa of internal adjustment it should be adequate for an AR with very nice glass and illumination you dont have to turn on.

I think I'd rather be able to range and use holdovers at any power.  This SS variable will probably be the scope unless I step up to the 2.5X10 IOR or the weavers come out to be pretty good.

IOR 2.5-10X42 FFP looks to have a SF where the sfp has no sf

That is the Illumination knob, in the SFP its on the eyepiece. At the power that these two scopes are at a Side foucs is not necessary and, 9X is definately enough power to shoot 500 yards.
