just new to this forum today. i have a NM S/A M1A and i want to put a good scope  on it. I will be shooting at a military range at distances from 200-800 yards. I do not want to spend a fortune and i am located in Canada.

I wouldn't put a scope on it and just shoot in service rifle matches.

Just my 2 cents.

Here is the low down:  If you use the M21 style base that uses the two huge screws on the left side of the reciever it puts the scope way up there add to that rings of any height and you have a huge problem with cheek weld. If you have a gunsmith set up the sight system like an M-25 it is lower and better but either way you really need the stock made for the M-25 by McMillan with a adjustable cheekpad.  You can use some kind of material to build up a cheek pad but nothing works well or looks good that I have found.  So without proper cheekweld the only scope that will hold point of impact is an aimpoint due to the nature of the scope. I recommend using iron sight - but those are your alterenatives.

M3A:
Our M3A stock was designed as an alternative to the pistol grip type M2A. It has a vertical pistol grip with a wrap-over thumb shelf and can be equipped with a vertically adjustable saddle type cheekpiece. The butt is similar in design to the A-2 stock and can be fitted with an adjustable spacer system or a fixed length of pull. The forend is slightly smaller than our Match M1A and is consequently lighter and more maneuverable. It must be bedded. It is not legal for NRA Service Rifle Competition. For M14/M1A rifles only.

Thanks for both comments. I would like to use the NM sights on the rifle now, but at my age, 800 yards would be a very long shot. I have purchased a Bushnell 10x Tactical Scope and have only shot it on my club's 100 yard range. It works very well, but i think it will have some limitations when i try it at 800 yards. or maybe not.

If it is not satisfactory, i will put it on my other regular M1A or my Chinese copy, either way the money was not wasted. I am also trying to get Canadian prices on Sightron scopes, but there are no sales outlets in Ontario, only Western Canada. Any comments on a Sightron 6x24, S11 with mil-dot??

thanks bigbill

thanks for the info on stocks, but my rifle has an original M-14 wooden stock designed for the M-14 weapon  and built in the 1960's by Canadian Arsenals in Etobicoke, Ontario, Canada after the original US designer went out of business. There are pictures of a similar stock on the M14 website by different. Mine is exactly the same as his, with a bipod, sling,  and a front fold-down metal hand grip. It looks spectacular, and at 100 yards with the Bushnell, groups approx 1". It may well group better, but i have a neurologicl disorder which affects my hands and causes shaking.

I will try to post some pictures

thanks

Blackhawlk makes a cheekpiece that may help and there are some leather lace on type cheek pieces out there somewhere. almost anything to build it up will help.  Koshkin is quite fond of the Sightron SII scopes and reports very favorable things about them. I have looked at the S1 and was not impressed but the dealer here does not have any of the SII but like I said they are reported to be very good. With this rifle I would be more inclined to stay at or below 40mm objective to keep it lower on the rifle using the lowest possible mounts.  What about an IOR 6x42 tactical scope.
