Sad, very sad.

We forget just how fragile our existence on this planet really is.

"Looting" is kind of a loose term, don't you think?

To "loot" food or water that would spoil in the store anyway, I say go for it.

I would to feed my family. Seriously. And so would most people that frequent this great web site.

That said, when these idiots are looting and stealing plasma TV's, guns, etc., thats a different animal all together, IMHO.

But, I'm just not sure that "shooting on sight" is called for in any looting circumstance.

Sweep me with a barrel of a firearm once and all bets(and safties) are off!!

I'm going hot!

I have some contacts in the security industry that are on the ground there now. I await the intel dump.

Can't vote on this.  Why, because some should be shot and others should not.  Looters who use weapons that could harm the LE or NG or other citizens should be taken out yes.  The people who are shooting or even pointing weapons at the rescue workers should be dealt with using lethal force.  However those looting without weapons and are not causing serious bodily harm to others should not be shot.  Are those TV's going to breech National Security?  No, is a few missing TV's going to kill someone?  Maybe the looter trying to carry a heavy ass TV through the water.  I'm not condoning what these people are doing, I'm just saying they could be dealt with by less than lethal means.  These people are still Americans last time I checked folks.  If this is allowed, when does it stop.  I know I'm going out on a limb but what happens when the Constitution comes under fire.  Us who support the Constitution go to the capitol to protest.  The government officials feel threatened by us and order the military to open fire and kill us all.  Where does the use of US forces on American citizens stop?  Who will draw that line?  I think this situation will justify similar situations in the future.

I didn't mean to imply that those people that are stealing TV's should be shot on sight, Mithran. They should be arrested for sure, if it's practical to do so.

No one that's not brandishing a firearm should be fired upon.

I should have been more Pacific, as my little sister use to say.

People looting for food or clothing is FAR differant from someone stealing TV's, computers, etc. Those people stealing firearms and using them on rescue personell is just nutty!

Kinda scary that so many people that took the poll answered to shoot on sight though.

Good point about about Uncle Sugars excessive use of force too.

Mithran, I have to disagree with you.  I would advocate the shooting of all looters with the exception of those retrieveing the necceseties of life, ie. food and water.  The rest are promoting anarchy and the wanton theft and destruction of private property.  The laws differ from state to state, but in my home state of TX, it is perfectly legal to use deadly force to protect private property (especially at night).  I also think that those looters who went after food and water should have tacked a check or an IOU to the wall.  I have been in countries were looting was widespread and force is the only thing that can bring things under control.  The pictures I saw of New Orleans were no different then what I have seen first hand in third world nations.  Trust me, you do not want to let people start this kind of thing in this country.  If you think I am being too harsh, look at looting as a gateway crime.  If I can steal a television in front of the police today and get away with it, maybe tommorrow I can steal a gun, maybe then I can rape someone.  Let me see, I got away with stealing the television, I got away with stealing the gun, I got away with rape, I ndon't like the looks of this Mithran fellow, I bet I can get away with murdering him.  Do you like that scenerio?  Not me.  I much prefer the one where the same person sees one or two people immediately shot for looting.  He now thinks to himself; if I steal that television I am going to be killed.  I had better just listen to the people who are trying to help and not cause any trouble.  You may think that is putting it into too simple of terms.  But, it really is as simple as that.

good reply ranburr, letting these things go unchexed leads to worse and worse problems. These people had plenty of warning to stock up on essentials( and even get out of the city for that matter.) Its liberal boo hoo crap and the fear of putting a few of these turds in a body bag that enables these people to get away with these things, also what about the rights of these store owners to not have their property stolen? dont they have rights too.

ranburr & Happy

I need to move to TX than.  Back on subject though being in third world countries is something we have in common my friend.  Believe me the boo hoo liberal BS that has gotten plenty of us combat veteran's brothers killed in combat really pisses me off as well.  And I completely agree with popping a few so others would think twice.  KISS is one of my biggest disciplines.  I think about how much better a place Kalifornia would be if some of these wackos here were popped.  Not saying I would unless it came down to defending my family, friends or myself.  The fact is this is not a third world country.  It may seem like it is now, but we have a justice system, how screwed up it may be, we can't just go around shooting some guy stealing a TV with no weapon.  I see your point and I didn't say the LE down there should let people get away with this stuff.  The looter or thief who is stupid enough to steal in plain sight could easily be subdued non-lethally and flexi cuffed.  The use of force does not always have to be lethal.  What really concerns me is killing unarmed citizens who are not a lethal, physical, or a threat to National Security.  If its allowed now, it will be allowed later, for other reasons, and we may be the targets my friend.  That's my real concern.

Why is it OK to whack some guy or gal while looting during or right after a disaster, and NOT OK to whack them during normal conditions?

I mean, if I read the newspaper here in NC about a cop shooting an unarmed thief for stealing a jug of milk, I would be appalled. So would most of you if it happened in your hometown.

Lethal force is not to be taken lightly.

The fact that the state and federal guys are rounding up EVERYBODIES firearms is more than a little scary to me, friends.

Kicking in doors, clearing buildings, etc....Not my house!

If it happened here, there would be some major problems. I decided a long time ago not to surrender my firearms under any circumstances, including disasters.

I'm not sure I would leave my home either. My wife has some parrots and cockatoos that need o be taken care of, plus my dog.

Telling people they HAVE to get out of THIER homes is wrong!!

First of all most people dont act like these people have in NO, these folks are  downright criminals and deserve what they get. (hopefully a bullet or a long drop with a sudden stop) i mean i know every situation is diffrent a gallon of milk i can live with,if someone is going to steal milk its prolly for their kids but just stealing anything you can get youre hands on is another matter.Bottom line is if you steal that makes you a thief and more likely than not a list of other things also.

I can see the looting for food and water. I would too. Whats gets me is the barbarians that were shooting at the rescuers and helicopters and then complain they are getting no help. I am an EMS worker and was set to go down and then changed my mind after hearing all that. Not worth it. If they wanted help from me, act more civilized. It must of been tough to deal with but where and what can you get or gain by acting that way.

Friend these animals that were taking the tv's would cut your throat just to pass time. I understand where you are coming from but it's nice people like you that has gotten us in the bind that we are in here in Louisiana. My best friend had to go down there when the storm hit and is still down there. He has told me things that the nice tv thieves have done to other people and it bothers me just to hear it. I say shoot and aim for the head. I'm sorry but after putting up with trash like this as long as we have it just makes you think that way.

I heard that Wal-Mart's insurance was capped out pretty quick and to keep from losing everything to looters they publicly announced that they were "donating" the damaged stores contents and for the needy to come and get it.

Pretty smart right off.
