i am assuming you will be hunting deer-sized game out to 300 yrds or so?

my vote, of the three, is the 3-12x50.

it will be brighter than the 42 and you won't need the adjustments on the variable at that range.

let us know what you decide.

I have the 3-12x42 and I don't believe that the 50mm will fit in medium rings.  It might but I'll bet you will have to go to highs.  That is the reason that I prefer the 42mm because it would mount lower.  I would be happy will the 50mm as well.  I would be cautious about assuming that the 50mm will be brighter.  Technically it may be true, but in my experience it is not very noticable.  I don't have any experience with the Zenith.  I talked to the reps at the New England Custom Gun booth at the SCI show to ask them the real differences.  There were very minor differences mostly cosmetic and I don't really like the curved bell on the Zenith.  He mentioned that the eyepiece on the Zenith was different and he prefered it but didn't say it was any better.  I would go will the 3-12 variable in either the 42mm or 50mm depending on how high you want to mount it only for cosmetic purposes.  You may like the look of the Zenith though.

i have A/B'd two of the same scopes in a 44 and a 50mm and noticed a difference in brightness. zeiss conquests, actually.

i can DEFINITELY tell a difference (at the same magnification) between 40 and 50mm's of the same make.

these are, of course, MY eyes. and not a scientific experiment.

and i was in almost complete darkness in the woods.

Good info, I don't at all doubt your findings.  I have on occasion noticed a difference but many times have been surprised at how little of a difference there is.  My point is that sometimes the difference is very small and insignificant but not always.  I also believe that there are slight variations in all optics.  I'll bet you could line up 10 50mm conquests and some may be slightly brighter than others.  So you could get a unusually bright 50mm and an unusually dim 44 and there would be a very noticable difference.  Or the opposite could be true and you could have 2 scopes and could hardly tell any difference at all.  Most of the time I have found that bigger objectives are brighter but the difference is small, but I also haven't done this enough to decisively conclude one way or another.

I wish people like yourself who own similar scopes of different objectives or different scopes of the same objectives would take them outside and test them side by side and post their results.  The more info we get, the better.  From a science perspective, I like lab results better than subjective results due to the placebo effect.  But when it comes to optics testing, the few actual lab results that I have seen are ridiculous to me.  As of now, I have better faith in the opinions of some of the people on this forum than in the "lab results" that I have read.  We need more people to do what you have done and not just once but multiple times.

i can put it this way:

The difference may be tiny to some.........but where i hunt in game managment,

the bucks have to be 8 points or better.  The little bit extra brightness can reveal that the 'six' pointer

you have been glassing, is actually an 8 pointer.  or vice versa. The bigger objectives have saved my

ass a time or two, and made me an even more responsible hunter in the process.
