Hi there,

I'm new to picking scopes and have looked at many.  I've just bought a Weatherby Vanguard .300 mag for Elk hunting and would like to get a scope for it.  I know I'm going to get schooled for the next remark, but I really don't want to spend a lot, I would like to keep it under $200.  I currently have a Bushnel Rangemaster 4-12AOx40 on my .30-06  which I like, but can't find it anymore.  I saw a scope brand I have never heard of and wanted to know if it would get the job done or was junk.  It is NcStar mark III 4-16x50mm (my eye sight not so good these days)for $143, what do you think?  Do you have anyother recommendations?

do NOT get a NCstar - you would be throwing money away.

try a nikon buckmaster, or an elite 3200 (preferably w/ rainguard) - go for the elite 4200 if you can afford it.

Bushnell 3-9x40 Elite 4200 Rifle Scope - spend the extra 58 bucks!!! it's a great scope.

good luck

I'm concerned 3-9x and my eye sight will not bring the animal up well enough at 300-400 yards. What about the Bushnell Legend Series 4-12x40?

What game are you shooting? and why 300 to 400 yards?  Staying with the better series of scope will help you to see clearer and make up for some of the eye problems.  What happens is in a cheap scope all you get is a magnified blur, or no detail.  The better scope will let you see if it is a spike or a doe.  So you get more use of the magnification you have. I would not go below the 3200 series myself.

Nikon 4.5-14x40 Buckmaster -

6826

this is on the www.samplelist.com - this would be a good scope for the money.

i don't have LOTS of experience higher magnification scopes.

good luck.

Thanks JonBravado.

I'll be hunting Elk in New Mexico, one of the guys that hunts there has said it is not uncommon to have 3-400 yard shots accross some of the canons.

no problem at all.

yep, i am a whitetail hunter and NEVER need to take a shot over 250 yards or so.

knock em dead. the good scopes on the sample list don't last too long, so if you are interested in that one, i would get it.

happy hunting.

Good, solid advise from the guys.

What part of NM will you be elk hunting?

I've hunted mulies in the NE corner near Raton.

Thanks Cheaptrick.

Its south central (section 34).  This guy normally hunts mule deer, but they haven't been as good the last few years.  He says there is more Elk to be had and is going to try that next year.
