I recently acquired a Ruger 77/44 to use for deer hunting here in Ohio. I am looking for a low power variable that would be used mostly for stand hunting with the occasional still hunt with shots out to about 125-150 possible. I'd like the lower power around 1.5-2 and the high end at 5-7 for load development and sighting in.

The two scopes I have it narrowed down to are the Vortex Diamondback 1.75-5x32 and 2-7x35. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to look at either scope in person to compare them. Looking at the specs there is only a few feet difference in field of view so no real advantage to either one there for me. The one advantage I see in the 1.75-5 is a little more eye relief. I guess my main question is which one would be better suited for low light situations? Like I said I haven't been able to compare the two in person, so hoping some else has and can give me their thoughts. Or is there something else I should be looking at in the sub $200 price range?

I've got a SS 1-6x24 on my Ruger 44 Deerstalker.  Very popular scope for everything from close quarter combat/dangerous game to brush hunting or close range big game.  Just a tad over your target budget though.

To answer your question, they are both capable of transmitting the optimum amount of light to your eye at just about the same power (4.5x on the 1.75 and 5x on the 2-7).  If you ask your self, what does the 1.75-5 that the 2-7x does not have?  Answer:  1.75x.  What does the 2-7x have that the 1.75x does not have?  Answer:  6x and 7x.

If you think most of your shots are going to be within 25 yards then the wider FOV and little bit lower magnification would be handy.

If you think most of your shots are going to be around 100 yards I would opt for the higher magnification.

Something that goes all the way down to 1x or thereabouts would be a good option for the 77/44.

The choice of the scope really comes down to your budget.

In an ascending price order from $180 to $1000:

Weaver V3 1-3x20
Nikon Monarch 1-4x20
Burris Fullfield 30 1-4x24
Bushnell Elite 1.25-4x24
Minox ZA5 HD 1.2-6x24
Weaver Super Slam 1-5x24
Leupold VX-R 1.25-4x20
SWFA SS 1-4x24
Meopta Meostar 1-4x22
Leupold VX-6 1-6x24
SWFA SS 1-6x24

I bought the VX2 2-7x33 CDS for my 77/44. once I get it a favorite load I will order the CDS dial. Based on a phone call to Leupold with heavy deepcurl flat point 240 gr loads, one turn of the dial would get me 200 yds. This would get you 2x up close capability and at higher powers also the ability to adjust to the edge of the cartridges capabilities (around 125-150 yds).

Finally got a chance to look at a few scopes in person. I really like the Leupold VX-R for the dark woods, unfortunately it's out of the budget now. Think I'll throw something cheap on there till the budget permits the VX-R.
