Anyone out there have some advice on what scope to mount on my M1A, I am a citizen concerned about protecting my semi rural home in the time of need. I'm not sure about what would be the common sense range I would be dealing with(100Meters?) Thanks.

I'd say be ready for more than 100 meters - in time of need.

Also, anticipate taking a low-light shot.

How much you want to spend?  What are your primary concerns?

I have a SOCOM I use for pig hunting (similar in need to your home defense scenario: quick shots, made at night probably, on something that really, really wants to hurt you.)  For now, I have a Millett DMS on it, but that will change the day the Trijicon AccuPoint comes out 9which should be in about a month, I think.)  The Millett is decent, the glass is good for a $200 scope, but it is a $200 scope.

Budget will play a big part in what you buy, but i would recommend illumination and not much magnification.

Yes, that is my plan.

Also, do NOT get a 10X fixed-power scope if the plan is to engage moving targets at 100 yards.

Thanks for responding RC. The Millet scopes seem to be on the lower end of the spectrum with cost, you seem to have had a good experience with them. So I'm looking for 3 or 4X 9, does this sound like something in the ballpark? Thanks Jon

Here is mine (Bushnell Elite 4200 3-9x40):

I use it for hunting otherwise I would get a Super Sniper if I was just punching paper.

So your Aimpoint is adequate out to 300 yards? Is it a low light Scope? Thanks Jon

I have had relatively good luck with ONE Millett scope, and Millett is having some issues now, so I would not recommend getting Millett.

Bushnell 4200 is a great scope for the money.  I've heard good things about Vortex scopes but have not used, and have heard great things about Sightron but have not used.

Make sure whatever you get has a good low-end capability, since you will want low power for close shots.

These will mount with any set of two 30mm rings.  Red dot scopes work good for low light or heavy brush you pickup the dot very rapidly

+1 for the Smith Enterprises Weaver mount for $125.  IMHO it is the best deal on an all steel mount period, and it mounts the scope fairly low with Weaver Medium Grand Slam steel rings (they are only $18 too and rock solid).
