I just bought a used 30-30 from a buddy of mine and was wondering what size scope for deer and hog hunting.
 Something under 300.00 dollars

It has a Tasco 3-9X32 on it now. I was told by a few people that is should be in the trash can. I have been to the range and it works fine (right now)
Should I replace it with the same size in the Nikon line?

If it works and is paid for save your  money for a nice scope.  The see through rings don't do you any favors.  The K-4 Weaver is a classic for this gun.  A nice 2-7 is also classic.  The Bushnell 4200 2.5-10 is an extra clear scope that is popular.

The new Nikon 2x8x32 would be a real good choice for that rifle.  I'd defineitely lose the see thru mounts though.  The Elite 3200 2x7x32 would be ok, also.  Something in a 1x4 or 1.5x5 would work well too.  A lot of people on here really like the Weaver Classic V 1x3 scope.  Hope this helps.

  Hey,Rick.  WELCOME to OT!!!!

As an example take a 3-9x40:
3 = image size is magnified 3 times
    9 =    "        "     "     "        9    "
40 = diameter of the objective lense, the one farthest from your eye, in mm

Some scopes can be a bit less than their magnification specs say.

The Nikon Pro Staff in 4x32 or 2-7x32 should be fine. The Bushnell 3200 2-7x32 might also be fine, for more money you will get a little better glass and fully multi coated optics. Actually, I believe Weaver Classics are fully multi coated and are under $150.00 and you can get a Weaver V 1-3x20 or a 2-7x32.   If you like heavier reticles then the Burris 2-7x35 with a #4 reticle is about $190.00.    Ill bet you would like a Bushnell banner or Bushnell Trophy in 1.75 -4 x32 with either a plex or Circle x reticle and they look good on those guns. They have a larger view than that tasco but during the day the eye piece shows a lot of glare but they are under $100.00 and decent optically.

The first numbers (1-4) for example means you can turn up the magnification from 1 power to 4 power. The second number is the size of the lens or objective lens at the barrel end of your gun. The number (32 or 40) just tells you how many millimeters in diameter the lens measures. A 40mm is larger than a 32mm.

If you go with a 4200 Elite dont go with 2.5 -10 x40, its fairly long and heavy and way more than that gun needs. Get the 3-9x40 4200 Elite, it is shorter lighter and cheaper and still more than you need. The new Leupolds are more expensive but are lighter and have all types of reticles and would probably match that gun better.

ALL scopes have an adjustment on the eye piece for focusing the reticle and image. Your Tasco has it.  Then you have a parallax adjustment on some of the higher magnification scopes that also focuses but these don't concern you.

My 1895 Marlin, .45-70 has a Nikon Monarch 2-8x32 scope on it.  The scope has decent optics, is compact, has rugged construction, which allows low mounting and a good cheek weld on the low comb of the Marlin.  Your .30-30, see-through mounts are probably 5/8's inch too high for good cheek weld and accuracy.

Here's another one to consider depending on your budget and to my mind would fit the profile of your rifle better:

Leupold 1.5-5x20 VX-3 Riflescope Heavy Duplex Leupold 1.5-5x20 VX-3 Riflescope
Stock # - LEU66365
  • Gloss
  • Heavy Duplex
  • 1"
  • Xtended Twilight Lens System
