If you are used to a 2-7 which is a great power range for big game in my opinion.....you should look at one of the new Leupold VX-III 2.5-8x36 scopes with a Boone & Crockett reticle.

FREE S&H and FREE Rings and Bases makes it about the same as a $400.00 scope

Great deal and same concept as the B&C by Leupold, you won't be disappointed. Burris makes a great scope and the Ballistic Plex is a lot of fun. |

I have been shooting for about 20 years and dealing with optics for about 15. I think $400 is a good place in the rifle scope hierarchy. It may not give you the very best, but it gives you a damn fine product. Formost it get's you away from the $100-200 Mart scopes.
Docter makes a 3-9 for about $350 or E250. It's heavy but tough as nails and brigher than any Vari-X III. The Zeiss Conquest 3-9 is very bright, and tough enough. I have one sitting on a custom 9.3x64. It can deal with this recoil so it must be stout. Nikon, Pentax, Leupold, Weaver (think Grandslam), and Burris all make really decent glass for under $400.
Burris tends to be the brightest of the American and Asian brands, but usually has less eye releif than the others. I have two Burris 3-9 Fullfield 2s. One on a 35 Whelan, the other on a Blaser 7x64 barrel.
Everyone has a Leupold. I have only one bitch with the "L" word. They seem to be the last people to improve something. It took a lot years for Leupold to come up with a VARI-X II that was as good as a Fullfield 2. The king of the mountain should look down and see what bullys want him off the hill. |

Very accurate last paragraph!!!!!!!! Leupold makes a fine product, but the Vari-X-III's have been beat in light transmission by Weaver, Nikon, Burris, and Bushey 4200's for a number of years. Can't say anything about the VX-III's though. I have not looked through one of them at dark. Most Leupys look "grainy" to me. Not the resolution of the competition.

If it ain't accurate at long distance, the fact that it is flat shooting is irrelevant.
