Because blackthorn 209 is that much better, understand I don't have a horse in this race. There is no comparison..

Blackhorn cleans likes somkeless,,,huge plus right their. No swabbing between shots and getting the rod jammed on a crud ring because you don't have the priceier muzzleloading '209' primers handy. Unlike older BP substitutes, shelf life is essentially indefinite, another big plus.
It does require a high flame temp to ignite, so use hot '209's', but still, no nasty crud ring at the breech end.

Lamentably, because of the hot spark required,  it isn't suitable for sidelocks,,,unless you convert to '209' ignition. I considered that for one of my sticks, but decided the conversion wasn't suitble for the field.

Well said H M when I said 20 shots without swabbing I was being conservative. There isn't anything to compare with it.

There is no doubt about that. I'm a mfg. rep and I cover all of upstate NY and a small piece of Western PA. I'm off to Elmira for two days doing an in-store promotion @ Hesselson's Sporting Goods Store.

I bought the least expensive in-line i could find, a CVA Wolf break open ($150). It turns out, it has a perfect trigger, crisp at 2.5 lbs, breaks like a glass rod. I use BH 209 only, the best of the best. No corrosion, no moisture absorbtion. Don't have to clean the bore after shooting. High velocity.
I use between 80 and 100 grains of powder, most of the time just 80. With 250 gr. Hornady SST bullets, Harvester crush rib sabot, generic Nobel Sport shotgun 209 primer, and 4x scope, that rifle settles into groups after the third shot over a cleaned bore. It shoots 10-15 shots into 0.75" - 1" at 150 yards all day, any day, regardless of temperature, moisture, etc. With this combination, any bullet of any make in the 240-250 grain weight will strike in the same area, a 1.5" group at 100. I did try loose 777, and Pyro-pellets but this BH 209 is much more accurate. My Wolf is by far the most predictable and accurate muzzleloader i ever saw at the range, and i go there a lot. I am convinced that BH 209 is the main cause. Also, i do not swab between shots, do not fire an empty cap between shots, just load and shoot. If i remember correctly, it was very difficult to ram a bullet down the bore after a few shots with 777, even after swabbing. With BH 209, they slide down as if greased, even after 25 shots.
Plus, i really like cleaning at the end of a season: just cleans like any other rifle, rather than needing soap or ammonia and hot water and scrubbing.
I really am not a brand name junkie, i really don't care about companies and brands. But i stick to BH 209, always. Come every December, i just fire 4-5 shots to check zero and i am ready to hunt. In the last 3 seasons, groups and zero have not changed at all. I bought 5 jugs of this powder, just in case consumers decide that it is too expensive and the company discontinues it.

Any one care to chime in on their entire shooting procedure? Everything from before the shot to in between shots and after the shot.

Thanks

I just shot a bunch last weekend. I changed scopes out on my Optima and put a Nikon Monarch 6x42 on it. I started shooting 100 grains of Triple 7 FFFg and Triple 7 muzzleloader primers. I was shooting 250 grain Powerbelt Aerolites.  Took me about 7 shots to dial in at 100yrds - starting at 25 yrds without bore sighting the scope at all. I swabbed the barrel after about 4-5 shots with a clean patch. After about 10 shots I was done and broke the rifle down and cleaned the barrel pretty good with some bore cleaner and cleaned my breech plug pretty good. I loaded it up and went hunting and shot a Doe saturday afternoon at 115yrds. Dropped her on the spot with a qtr towards shot in the neck that lodged in the opposite ribcage.

I am pretty novice at muzzleloaders but was hanging out with my Dad and it's about all he's done the last 15 years. I came home the following day and cleaned my gun thoroughly with some bore claener and ran a brush through the bore several times before running clean patches. I soaked the breech in some Barrel Blaster solution and cleaned it up good. Can't wait to get it out again!!

I have not shot a ton, but I don't think the Triple 7 FFFg is any harder to clean up after than the Blackhorn 209 I tried and the 777 FFFg works much better in my gun.

I've been looking at the Alliant; "Black MZ'. it's advertised as being suitible for all muzzle loaders.

I've looked at that 'mag-Spark' kit. I'd hate to drop that top locking piece in the snow,,,if you know what I mean.

I don't know if I would do that for the T/C renegade. BH 209 is designed specifically for inline muzzleloader with the 209 ignition.
