Should read "What makes a Tactical Scope a Tactical Scope?" but I ran out of spaces in the subject line.

I'm curious if someone can answer this for me.  I have a Mark V in 270 Weatherby.  I had a 28" Krieger target barrel put on it, and have it all set up for longer range hunting and shooting.  I've taken it out west hunting, and plan on generally using it when the ranges could be long and it doesn't matter so much that the gun weighs 12lbs.

I'm looking for a new scope for it, probably something in the 6-20x class (or thereabouts).  I'm wondering if someone can help me understand what the difference is between a "tactical" scope and a conventional.  For example, I'm looking at the Burris Fullfield II's and notice that there is a tactical version that sells for a bit more.  As near as I can tell the difference boils down to the types of turrets and having an olive drab finish.  Is there anything else?

Also, does anyone have an idea for a scope I should look at?  My budget is probably around $500 (could go higher if there's something really better I could get for say up to $700).

Thanks,

Ben

In truth, a "tactical" scope is one that has to work or you (or someone else) will die.  Today, it's a title companies put on thigns they want to sell: scopes, clothes, toothpaste, etc.

Mostly, it's marketing.

A true tactical scope must be very durable, very accurate, very precise, very repeatable, and very user-friendly under fire.

And, to answer your question specifically: the turrets and the finish are why they call it "tactical" but again, it's marketing.

Decide what you want to do with the scope and buy the one with the features that best align.  Forget the tactical, it's kinda like "sport" on pickup trucks or "Italian" on all the pretty things the ladies want.

Cool.  Thanks.  That's what I figured.  I'm leaning towards a Fullfield II with the B-plex reticle.  I may go for the "tactical" as it seems to only cost slightly more in that particular model.  I can see paying an extra $30 for the adjustable turrets.

Some, the glass ain't bad, the reticles has a few nice touches. The one-shot zero is a gimmick - that kinda works, but who trusts one shot?

And it ain't tactical, that is for absolute certain!

I would look at the Nikon Monarch

http://www.swfa.com/pc-8507-218-nikon-65-20x44-monarch-ucc-r iflescope.aspx

or the Super Sniper or the Millett TRS-1 all are available from SWFA  an are under $ 500

I have the Monarch and TRS-1 and I like both scopes the glass is better on the Monarch but the TRS-1 is a 4 to 16 power and a rugged scope with good glass just not as good or as expensive.

Ben, Shepherd scopes have kind of a cult following or so it seems to me.

The guys that love them, really love them. As stated, certainly NOT a tactical scope.

I'd spend my money elsewhere, if I were you.

Try a search on here and you can read some of the "chatter" about them and draw your own conclusions.

All the best!

Kinda.

I might refine it a bit and say the "intention" of the guy behind the trigger.

Thanks for posting the link to my articles, cheaptrick.

The way I re-characterize the issue is to discuss "practical" shooting, for pistol, 3-Gun, and long-range / precision.

Just look at the scopes the military is using in Iraq and you know tactical.  Enough said.
