Both New York Times and Wall Street Journal are reporting Senate Republican's blocked a voluntary program to upgrade infrastructure computer security.
No reason given, not even that it might cost the utilities more and consumers more.
What just happened...we have been discussing our vulnerabilities in this area for years.
The program would be voluntary, not mandatory.
Does anyone have any insight why this happened.

The fact of the matter is nobody in DC knows how to spend money on useful things...

It's more of an issue over the approach. This one would impose rules vs. the GOP-supported SECURE-IT plan which would promote information sharing between the government and private industry about cyber threats. In my experience, the former won't work because technology changes too fast. The latter *probably* won't because implementing systems to cooperate on anything is hard.

Just as I thought, we are screwed.
We are arguing about so many trivial things and social issues that we are letting the important stuff get flushed.
Some in Congress are so busy trying to look under everyone's sheets they forget there are real bad people out there who want to kill us.
Imagine the haji's shutting down our power and water grid during this heat wave and all the people it would kill.
Peoples lives don't seem to matter anymore to either party, if they did this would have been taken care of long ago.
Back in the day LBJ and Everett Dirkson said bad things about each other in public but got together at night and sorted out the nations business, now even looking at a member of the other party, much less co-operating to get the nation's business done would get you drummed out of your party.
The Republicans seem to by a bit worse than the Democrats in this regard.
Rant over.

Far too few seem to really be paying attention.  Too many caught up in their "own little world" and think they can just forget about everything else...

Beware, be aware, this is NOT science fiction...

Appearently irrisponsibility is the consinsus for all government organizations these days. Just left the gun shop picking up an order and talked with a regular customer. He tells me that a few weeks ago he got a call from his wife saying someone was trying to break in the house. He happened to be a block or so away so he pulls in the driveway seeing a rather large black guy wearing a suit trying to shoulder the front door open. When the guy sees him pull up he walks up to the passenger door as if they were buddies. My friend (in a mild state of shock from the guys boldness) asks "what the ****are you up to" Ofcourse my friend is holding his Glock in his right hand in plain sight. After seeing the Glock the guy steps back and says some bull about looking for his brother. My friend makes a gesture with the Glock and tells the guy to hit the road. The guy walks off about 40-50 yrds and pulls a simi-auto 9mm and dumps a mag at my friend in the truck then walks across the road to a mini-mart where his gets in a van with two other guys in it and speeds off. The law shows up and start treating my friend like he's made the hole thing up. Claiming they can't find any spent brass or any holes in any of his property. He walks out in the street and shows them 13 9mm hulls all in a nice group just to the right of where he told them the guy was standing. Then he shows them three hole in the front of his house and where several rounds hit the ground around the truck. A few days later he stops by the PD to see if they have anything going on and finds that no one can find where a report has been filed.

Now I have many good friends in our local PD and I know sometimes stuff just don't get done to the letter but, what burns my biscuts is this sort of thing is becoming the norm more often than not. I know many of you having more experience with confrontation would like me probably have dropped the guy right beside that little group of brass and the story would have been very different. But for the majority of folk out there who don't have that kind of experience we have to trust that the law do better when these things happen. He later found out that those three guys had a mo of one breaking in and checking the score and then calling the other two to come with the van and load up. And this info came from the PD because they were very aware of who they were. That I'm not too suprised at because its up to the court to put em away and not kick em out the same day with a 50.00 fine which seems to be the norm.

Not intending to hijack this thread I share this with a question. How are we going to get our country back fron the incompetitent and the corrupt????
All elected offices need to have term limits not to exeed 8yrs. The supreme court needs to have term limits for the same. All judges need to be held accountable for the rulings they make. If they release a repeat offender without regard to what that person will do once released then the judge should receive the sentence with that offender on any future crime. You say the prisons will overload. Enforce the law. A verdict of murder automatic death penalty with one appeal option if there is merit. Theives remove a hand. Rapist, remove the tool. Society demands limits and boundries but those in office today are bent on limiting everything but themselves.
