Looking to buy a gun safe (someday) and wanted to get something decent, but at the same time looking to spend under $700.

Are there good ones out there for around $500?

They are not real heavy duty, but it would add some security.  The larger models seem to be pretty decent, but cost more than $500

Look for a used one.  ALOT of people if moving will sell them cheap just so they don't have to move them.  Friend of mine who moved up from the city sold his 24 gun safe for $500.  Paid $900 for it.

Good tip 300.
Call911, the first thing you need to do, if you haven't already, is to evaluate your real needs in a safe. Do you have a few common guns that you want to keep unauthorized persons (kids or guest) out of? Is your collection fixed or are you going to add to it in the future? Is fire a possible threat? How secure is your primeses and do you have an alarm system? Do you have a large expensive and growing collection that is going to grow? Answering these questions first may save you from buying a cheap safe only to have to buy another one later, or finding that your whole collection and safe have been stolen or burned up. Buy once, cry once. Do you want to by a $500 safe to protect a $50,000 collection, or a $3,000 safe to protect a $500 collection?

I have 2 rifles now (might get one or two more max) and a handgun. They are important to me, and I would like the safe to protect other things as well, my will, grandfathers watch ect. I want it to protect the items from fire and theft, but the premisis is under a decent security system, and the safe will be in a difficult location to get to.

I will need something decent, don't want to go cheap. If my $500-$700 price range will not cover these needs, let me know what safe and what price range would.

I doubt you will get much fire safety for $500.  That seems to be where safes get real expensive real quick.

A friend of mine bought this safe and is happy with it.  It's a liberty safe, and this is a very good price for this one.

I would take a hard look at craigslist for a good used one.  We found one for a buddy on there for like $300 bucks if we could move it by friday cause they where moving and it was a nice browning digital safe.

300S&W that looks like a decent one!

ckk1106 that one looks like a definate champ! What was the price on it though?

SVT_Tactical; I may end up looking for one on Craigslist, but there's no telling what will be out there if anything, and I need to know what would be good safe's to have, and then out of that, see if any are available. Good idea looking for a used one though.

I just went through this and bought a safe as well.  For under $1000 the best fire protection you will get is 30 min.  If you want 1 hour better jump up to around $1200 to $1500 if you want 2 hour start looking at $2000+.  Obvious this is based on size as well, but it seems the best fire protection safes are also very large.

You could buy a 30 min one and reline it with more sheetrock to up the fire protection, but it will cost you space inside.

In UTah that Liberty safe Ckk1106 showed is $688.  Not a bad price at all.  Plus 30 min fire protection.
