US students robbed in Pretoria

2014-05-14 11:30

Johannesburg - Several United States university students and their chaperones were robbed on a bus in Pretoria, police said on Wednesday.

Thirty students and five chaperones were robbed on the tour bus in Eeufees Road in Pretoria on Sunday morning, Brigadier Neville Malila said.

"The tour bus was stopped by four armed motorcyclists," Malila said.

The bus driver stopped the vehicle when one of the motorcyclists threatened him with a firearm.

The other three armed motorcyclists then got onto the bus and stole an undisclosed amount of US dollars and several cellphones from the students and chaperones, before fleeing the scene, Malila said.

No one was harmed in the robbery.

According to an online report by the Baltimore Sun, the students were from Stevenson University in Maryland in the US, and arrived in South Africa over the weekend to begin a five-week programme of study, work, and travel.

The university made the decision to cut the five-week tour short to ensure their well-being.

"The students are for the most part reluctant to come back," university spokesperson Glenda LeGendre told the newspaper on Monday.

US embassy spokesperson Jack Hillmeyer said the embassy was aware of the robbery but could not divulge specific details because of privacy regulations.

"We take the safety and security of Americans travelling overseas very seriously and we have extensive resources available to them," said Hillmeyer.

No arrests had been made and police were investigating, said Malila.

Wait a minute. South Africa has strict gun control laws, so those robbers couldn't have been armed with FIREARMS. I think those lying Americans are just trying to taint the reputation of those poor South Africans.

Gun control is only for law abiding citizens. This country is awash with illegal firearms. The police is the biggest source of these illegal firearms.....theft from police stations lost firearms etc.

No, not at all.

We have strict licensing requirements in that you need to prove you need it, you need to prove you are competant with it (ie attend a shooting class and obtain a cerificate or competancy certificate), pass certain questions regarding your mental stability ie no violent behaviour, criminal record, mental illness, addictions etc. Your spouse also has to go on record to verify you are not prone to domestic violence. You also need to have a safe that is bolted to a wall.
All of the above is OK and the hoops not to high to jump through. Our real gripe is the time it takes to process the application and the lack of transparency in the process.

You are permitted one handgun for self defence and 3 other firearms for sports or hunting. If you obtain dedicated status through active membership to a hunting or shooting club, you are allowd up to 10 firearms.

Once you have a licensed firearm normal carry and use rules apply. You are for example allowed to have a firerm in a holster on your person walking in the street.

The use of it and the consequences is another ball game. You are allowed to shoot to kill a person who is about to harm you or some-one else. You are not allowed to shoot some-one who poses no threat, even if he is busy carrying your TV out of your living room.

Now that the ANC has taken over, I guess lots of names have been changed.  It seems they have re-named a lot of the provinces and split them all up....do they still have Jan van Riebeeck everything in South Africa...or has his name been purged, too?
