hifirst sorry for my poor english. This is my first missage but I know the forum some time ago.I'm from Catalonia and I find a riflescope for my 17 HMR RIFLE. I like these models. With this weapon I would practice precision shooting about 100-200 meters and hunt fox, rabbits, haresWhich has better overall quality of optics, materials, strength ... I like BURRIS reticle (ballistic Mil-Dot) but is the most expensive and perhaps is in the category of VIPER SERIES of VORTEXVORTEX CROSSFIRE II  6-18X44 (dead-hold bdc reticle) 300 euros http://www.vortexoptics.com/product/crossfire-II-6-18x44-ao-with-v-plex-moa-reticleWEAVER CLASSIC V-SERIES 6-24X42 (mil-dot reticle) 415 euros http://www.weaveroptics.com/optics/riflescopes/classic_v/BURRIS FULLFIELD II 6,5-20X50 (ballistic mil-dot reticle) 480 euros http://www.burrisoptics.com/fullfield1.html#65x20x

I have a Burris 4.5-14 FF II on one of my 17 hmr. My preference would be this scope of the choices provided. Enough mag to reach the range the 17 is effective. Burris also furnish drop stickers that work very well with commercial rounds for many calibers. The Vortex use the same base ballistic curve on there ballistic reticle. I think that the FFII has better glass than the Crossfire. My experience has been that I do not gain any advantage with the 20X Mag range.

thanks 3_teensIf I opt for a less magnification riflescope I like the model you have, is one of my options with VORTEX DIAMONDBACK 4-12X40 A0 (dead-hold bdc reticle) and WEAVER V-SERIES 4-16X42 AO (ballistic -x reticle)  http://www.vortexoptics.com/product/vortex-diamondback-4-12x40-ao-riflescope-v-plex-reticle / Which you think is the maximum effective distance of 17 HMR aprox.??

Catsniper, I have a Savage 93-17 any scope you selected will work, I use a Mueller 8-32x40 fine reticle with dot, very accurate @100 yards, I would not shoot any varmints beyond 250 yards max but can target shoot out to 300 yards with very little wind.

Personally I prefer a fine reticle or varmint plex reticle , I don't care for clutter in a scope the ballistic types have a use for some but not for the type shooting I do.

It depends on the shooter and the size of the game, I have shot PDs and Armadillos out past 225 Yds on a calm day.  If shooting over 250 yds. I am not sure if it would drop larger game such as a fox. or Armadillo. If you can hit a rabbit 300 yds it should knock him down.  You have high velosity but it does not have the mass to deliver much energy at 300 yds. You will need to dial in your shots at these ranges. The drop and accurate ranging will be critical over 225 Yds. For my shooting ability a BCD reticle will not be accurate enough.

Your English is much better than my Spanish.

The Vortex AO and Weaver AO scopes would work very well and have more easily used adjustments than the Burris. Keep in mind that ballistic plex reticles do not work the same at all power settings. You would get enough maginification to spot .17 caliber holes at 100 meters. Possibly the big Burris 6-20X50 would be too large for a small .17 HMR rifle.

My opinion is that the .17 HMR is good for 150 meters on small game. I like to put down game quickly and that little .17 bullet quickly drops velocity and energy.
