Has anyone tried any of the newer scopes like the Super Slam.I know the Meade era scopes were made in different factories.

The Weaver line of Super Slam scopes are being made in Japan now. I bought the 2.5-10x56 and although I'm a Leupold (VX-3 or higher) and Zeiss man I can't say anything but good about it. I also had 2 buddies buy the same scope and they have been really suprised at the light gathering and clearness off the optics. This is the first year we have put them through tough weather so how they will handle the elements of old mother nature is still up for debate! But all I can say is that for the money I have in the scope I couldn't be happier. If money isn't an object I would of course say go to a higher end scope but if you are on a buget I think you would be happier with this than a Bushnell or even most Nikons.

I don't think Weaver ever made a bad scope.  Since 1933....

I had a classic extreme 2.5-10x50 and my buddy bought a 56mm at the same time. They are great scopes, very good in low light!! The finish was not that tough and they were kind of heavy but they have nice glass. I would say easily as good as conquests,4200s,monarchs,etc. I think the Superslams are supposed to be about the same but I've never looked through one.

The Superslam is a great scope. Like others have said, a bit heavy but very good glass and mechanicals. I especially like the turrets.

FWIW, own a few of the higher power range Weaver Super Slams made in Japan by LOW.  As mentioned already, very good optics in them and the pull up turrets work well.  Only complaint I can make about them is their weight....not a scope you'd want on a light carry rifle.  Can recall a gent on another website asking about the Weaver Super Slams.  He was in Australia.  He would decide on buying a super slam after phoning an old friend that worked for a company that did repair work on rifle scopes in Australia.  His comment about the Super Slam was something to the effect the internals in the Super Slam was built like a tank and that he'd never had to repair a Super Slam with an internals problem.

the new weaver classic 'extreme is a different animal to the old model.it is made in the phillipines...did a side by side with the jap version in the 2.5-10x56 s/f ..not in the same league glass wise..and build wise to be expected as the old jap model had a much higher retail value then this new model.. not sure but told the new model retails at 250D..which in my opinion makes it good buy. cant say iv'e seen better at that price point..the old model was the steal off the century with a closeout off 300DExcellent
