I have a 1971 vintage Browning ATD LR that has an equally aged Weaver V22A scope mounted on it.  I've got many years of good service from both but the Weaver scope has a bad crosshair and perhaps it's time for a new scope.  I've found it to be very accurate despite the age and original cost.  The scope diameter appears to be 7/8" per caliper measurement.  I don't want to swap out the base unless I absolutely have to.  Not sure if it's weaver or Browning?  Perfer a variable 3 to 9 power like the weaver in a gloss finish.  Suggestions?

Today most scopes are either 1inch or 30mm however there are some 22 scopes in smaller diameter. Personally I would go with a 1 inch in a Sightron S1  3-9 I have one and like it, mine has mil dot reticle but there are other styles available. For rings and base suggestions I would call SWFA and see what they suggest - I'm sure they have something that will work nicely for you.

That Sightron S1 3-9 rimfire is a nice little scope and should be on your short list. Depending on what you're doing with it I personally prefer the Weaver RV9 3-9x32 w/AO rimfire scope. It's a bit pricier but includes an adjustable objective. It's not listed on Weaver's  sight so if you want one you best get one while there are some left in the channel. One thing that may help you deside is when scoping my rifles my rule of thumb is for a pure hunting/plinking rifle non-AO is a lot handier, but if I'm doing any target shooting then I want AO.

Those are both good suggestions.  Another possibility I'm considering is the Leupold VXII 3x9.  I'm purely a target shooter.

The S1 is a darling of a rimfire scope, I have one mounted on a browning abolt in .22lr and really like it.

If you're purely a target shooter then an adjustable objective isn't just an option it's a necessity. That leaves you the weaver RV9 in the 3-9x32 range. But I suggest looking at the Weaver V16. It's a beautiful 4-16x42 w/AO. With either a Fine or Plex reticle. I have a V24 with a Varmint-Plex reticle on my favorite 22. At 50yds you can read a fly's name tag with that thing. :D

The Weaver RV9 is calling my name I think.  I've had so many good shots with my old Weaver 3x9.  I can't believe that it has lasted as long as it has - just amazing.
