Ok, I got the Winchester m70 7mm rem mag yest. It came with an old Bushnell 4-12x40, millett rings and weaver two piece base. Long story short, I've decided on the Millett 4-16x50 trs-1, w/.1 mil turrets, but as the current scope sits a little bit to "forward", I was wondering of a way to move the scope back .5-1". Has anyone ever used the one piece weaver picatinny base on their bolt action?? I wonder if there will be any problem loading/unloading(no hinged floorplate) or ejecting rounds?? If it's not a good choice, what about the Burris Xtreme Tactical 2 Piece Bases?? I want to get good rings and bases, but I'm not going to have a lot to put on them. I'm thinking about getting Millett Tactical rings(30mm).

There are several good bases for the M70 LA . I used an EGW and now a TPS. Both are 1 piece picatinny rails though either will work better than the two you listed already.

A one piece base will for sure make it a little harder to access the loading port. But it is still very doable. I have two bolt guns with one piece bases and are able to load them just fine, it is just not quite as open is all.

Thanks guys, that was just what I was looking for. I believe this will work:
http://swfa.com/EGW-Picatinny-Rail-1-Piece-Scope-Mount-P46219.aspx Do you know how tall that base is?? I went to EGW's site, but the length was all they had posted. Trying to figure out how tall the bases will be. Thinking of these to start out: http://swfa.com/Millett-Tactical-30mm-Scope-Ring-w-Accessory-Rail-P11289.aspx According to Millett's catalog, the low mount is .319 and the medium mount is .482. For this 50mm scope. http://swfa.com/Millett-4-16x50-TRS-1-Tactical-30mm-Riflescope-P42548.aspx I just noticed something, on Milletts website, that scope is shown with a 56mm objective, but when you hit "buy now" button, it shows 50mm, plus SWFA shows as 50mm. Wonder if that's a typo on the site?? Does anyone have any experience, if not I'll email SWFA and see if they know. Thanks, ya'll have been a great help in this process. odie072 |

I believe that's a typo, looking at SWFA's site, the LRS is 56mm(6-25x56).

EGW bases are pretty high. I have an EGW on a Winchester heavy barrel. I have a Vortex 50mm scope with 30mm tube and super low TPS rings and I have room to spare even with Butler creek caps.

Thank you sir! That's what I need to know. I think I've found my new favorite forum, as I've posted the same question on a couple of other forums, but this is the only one that has told me what I need to know.
You guys rock! odie072 |

Thanks for the pic, that also answers a question about clearance of the bolt as opposed to the base.
Nice rifle, I'll post a pic once I get it set up. Thanks again odie072 |

Be carefull with the EGW rear base screws...installed 0 MOA bases on two Winchester rifles and had to cut the screws down on each. Not a big deal on my M-70, but on my friends the screws pushed the threads out into the action and bulged where the bolt slides. Easy enough fix, just thought I would let you know, so you didn't make the same mistake I did....if it gets too tight don't force it. I am happy with the EGW's other than that, oh ya, both bases I have are the HD model. Good Luck.
One more thing....might want to remove the bolt before base install. Edited by GetSome - November/29/2010 at 21:53 |

I have actually run into that problem with TPS and Seekins bases. But they were on Remington 700s and it was the very front screw. I guess sometimes they just put longer screws in the package instead.

Kind of off topic, but several years back, I worked in a job of sorting and QC'ing small screws and parts. We had a production limit and were supposed to be able to look at several hundred small parts and be able to pick out the ones that were just a few millimeters out of spec in several minutes. I have good eyes, and I couldn't do it, even with the magnifying glass setup we had(headaches). It's a wonder to me that more problems don't happen.
Just some useless trivia odie072 |
