Two years ago one of my friends bought a Weaver GS 50mm (from SWFA).  He told me that he compared it to a 3.5x10x50mm Vari-X-III and thought that the Weaver transmitted more light at near dark.  I told him that I had some doubts about that, so he invited me to go hunting with him and sit in one of his "condominium" stands so we could compare his Weaver to one of my Vari-X-III 50mm's in a side by side comparison.  To make a long story short, we watched deer until dark.  One of these deer was a small basket rack buck.  I had to admit that I could see the deer clearer with the GS than my Leupold, in fact, I could count points with the Weaver when I could barely make out the deer with my scope.  Both scopes were clean and set on the same power, in fact we checked them at different powers too.  The result was that the Weaver beat my Leupy.  I had a healthy serving of humble pie that day.

Here in SC we can legally harvest deer up to one hour AFTER legal sunset, so a scope with extreme low light performance is of great importance to us.  The last 10-15 minutes of light is the "meat and potatoes" time when hunting bean fields.   I am curious about a couple of things; first, how did Weaver accomplish this feat, and second, how does the new VX-III 50mm line compare to the Weaver and the Vari-X-III.  I am familiar with the percentage of light transmission numbers.  I am interested to see if anyone has compared these side by side in low light.

I am trying to decide whether I should get one scope such as the VX-III 6.5x20x50mm long range, or two scopes such as the Weaver GS and a 20x Super Sniper, one for hunting and one for long range precision shooting.  The dollars should shake out about the same. BTW, does anyone know the light transmission percentage range for the Super Sniper?

If anyone has compared any other scopes to the Vari-X-III's or Weaver GS, in a apples to apples low light comparison, I would be interested in hearing about it.

Thanks!

Weaver simply used better glass and coatings.  The new VX-III is noticeably brighter than the Vari X-III.  Most people that compare the VX to the Grand Slam have been saying that the Leupold is brighter and clearer.  They have not been out very long, wait till deer season starts and we should get some better "real world" comparisons.

I think two project specific scopes beat one do everything scope every time.  Just a P.I.A. swapping them out.  I don't have the light transmission specs on the SS glass, sorry.
