Greetings,
I am looking to re-scope my CZ 527 varmint in 223 using it for P dogs and as a walking varminter with the following choices.
Weaver Grand Slam 4.5-14X40 with ballistic X reticle
Bushnell 4-16X40
Leupold 4-12X40 LR reticle
I own several Leupold's of the VX3 variety, but do not wish to spend that much for this riflescope. I have a 4.5-14 x40 30mm with varminter reticle, but have not shot the rifle its on yet. I see no reason I wont like it.
I have a Bushnell 3200 4-12X40 on the CZ now and am not impressed. I cannot get a clear image above 9X. I read good stuff about the 4200 series, but have never looked through one.
I have read good reviews of the Weaver GS series and welcome thoughts and opinions about them.

I should add the Leupold choice is a VXII.
Is the Weaver Ballistic X reticle fine enough for small varmint work

Welcome to the OT SDnailbender. I have several yrs experience with the Weaver GS and the VXIII. When I bought the GS I had compared it to the VXIII and was pleased to find that it was "almost" as clear and good in low light as the VXIII. For the money it is probably the best deal in your list. I have no experience with the 4200, but some friends that do say they are near equal to the VXII. I hope to get a chance to check one in the near future. I checked the Sample list and saw that the GS and 4200 are close in price depending on what specifically you look at. If budget is not an issue I would have to go with the VXIII. But if I needed to scope something on a budget I would have no problem with the GS. Wish I had some experience with the 4200, but I think you would be pleased with any one on your list.
All that said, to answer your question I beleive the Weaver is the best bang for the buck.
Good luck! and let us know what you decide.

Thanks, Sgt. D
As I mentioned I have a VX-III with the varmint hunter reticle on another rifle and shot it yesterday. I really like it and am thinking hard about going with another VX-III with that reticle for the CZ.
I do have a VX-III 3.5-10X40 that could serve on the CZ for awhile, but again I may have spoiled myself with the adjustable focus and varmint reticle on the 4.5-14 VX-III.

I just picked up the same scope with and was really happy with the optical quality but so much with the balistic plex reticle. The "thickness of the crosshairs at all points was much to heavy IMO. It really obtructs the target and is to thick IMO. I returned it for the the standard duplex and although it's not quite as "fine" as a Leupold I was more than happy. Overall It's a great scope and offers Leupold VXIII quality for much less $$.
