Hi - my first post,

I am looking at ordering a Weaver Grand Slam 3-10x40 for my 223 Rem LVSF which has Talley LW low rings on it - I have noticed that the grand slams have a large power ring - will this combo fit together ok?

Any advice appreciated.  Thanks

Hey Geeman.  First off WELCOME to OT!

Here's a pic of a 3-10x40 GS on a Win Mod70 Classic Fwt using Leupold Rifleman bases and low rings which I'm sure are shorter than low Talley's. I've got no clearance  problems so I would think that scope should work for you.  By the way,GS's are VERY NICE scopes. I've also got a 4.75x40 GS.

Welcome to the OT, You can find a fair amount of info in the Rings and bases forum. I pulled this from there so you can have a fair idea of what you are dealing with. If you already have the rings, you can figure part of the equatsion. 300S&W can give you the measure of the GS objective. I have a GS with the 44mm OBJ, it is one I have really enjoyed. Good luck!

Measure the outside diameter of your scope's objective, then divide by that by two.

  Super Sniper 10x42 has an O.D. of 50mm.  50/2=25mm (.98")

This will be the dimension above which the ring and bases combined will need to raise the scope's centerline to clear a barrel that is the same diameter as the action..

Once you have that key dimension, all you need to do is select a base and ring combination that equals that dimension plus 3mm-5mm to accommodate lens covers.

  25mm+3mm=28mm (1.10")

Figure out how thick the base is.  IE: Badger Ordnance Remington 700 base is 7mm thick.

  28mm-7mm=21mm (.82")

Now you need rings which will take up the rest of the dimension.  This is where you need to pay attention because this is where most of the confusion and inconsistencies come from.  Manufacturer's ring heights are not uniform from brand to brand, IE: Burris' low is not the same as Leupold's low.  Ignore their descriptions and go by the actual measurement of the ring.  The actual measurement of "ring height" is determined two different ways.  Some measure from the top of the base (where the ring contacts it) to the centerline of the ring (Fig. A).  Others measure from the top of the base to where the ring first contacts the scope (Fig. B).  If the brand you are considering measures their ring height like Fig. B, you will need to add 12.7mm for one inch scope and 15mm for 30mm scopes to get to the centerline of the ring which is also the center line of the scope.

Badger Ordnance provides both measurements.  For the example Super Sniper on a Remington 700 we need a ring with a height of .82".  Badger Ordnance stock number 30680 measures .823" so these are the ring we would select.

Awesome - thanks for the advice.

I am a New Zealander so unfortunately won't be able to order from SWFA - it looks like the grand slam is going to end up being cheaper than the Leupold VXII 3-9x40 that I was planning on getting.

I know!

The VXII is pushing NZ$800 bought locally (and can't find anywhere in the US that will export Leupolds to foreigners) and by ordering the grand slam from overseas even with duties and exchange rates I should sneak under that....

Even the low Talley's seem a bit high. I'm thinking up to 45 mm scope tubes and you will still be o.k.

Best way for a sure fit is to e-mail Talley and give them the model scope and rifle info. They'll respond in short time. If you want to try and figure it out yourself, you best take some precise obj end measurements. The obj end on my SII 1.5-6x42 is a full 50.5mm.

I went ahead and ordered the Grand Slam - just been released by NZ customs and should be available for collection on Monday - we'll soon see if it'll fit!  Not too worried though.  Looking forward to testing it out...

Well, scope finally arrived and man am I impressed!  Fits great in the Talley lows and is really nicely finished.  Will hit the range this weekend to sight it in.

May even post a pic or two on the weekend if I work out how...

Thanks for all your help.
