Just mounted my Leupold VX-III 1.5-5X 20mm scope on my CZ 550 Safari Magnum in a 458 Winchester Magnum using Warne grooved QD rings. First time I have used Warne rings on a CZ rifle, but have used them on most of my other rifles. Just to let others know, which I did not know until mounting the scope, is that there is no key with these rings. There is a front and back ring. The back ring has a protrusion on the opposite side of the lever arm that mates into a notch in the left side of the receiver of the rifle. The front ring has no notch, groove or pin whatsoever and can be move any place along the built in 19 mm grooves. Very simple set up and intalls quickly.

Welcome to one of the oddities of that CZ & Warne Combo. That little protrusion is your recoil lug.

Yeap, I figured that there must be some type of lug as soon as I saw there was no key involved. I noticed the lug after I mounted the back ring on the front of the scope. Great set up though.

I bought a picatinney rail from CZ for my 550 it fits tighter than their rings but it raises the scope base up a full 10 millimeters, looks like a carry handle. I do like the trigger on the CZ with the set trigger function. are you planning a big game hunt soon for the heavy caliber?

No, I just liked the rifle and the price was too good. However, I will use it bear hunting this year with 350 and 405 grain bullets. It should work well for that. |

I dont think you can have too big a caliber for bear, that is where you want a real one shot one kill rifle.

Thats the way I figure it. I was also going to work up some handloads for my 375 RUM also. Last year I took every thing from the custom 243 that I built, that shoots holes on top of each other at 100 yards with handloads, for head shots to my semi-custom Wby. 300 that I put together. This year, I am going to go big, but take one my other rifles for foul weather.

I didn't see it in your range report. Do you have confidence in this single lug? Also, did you notice any movement, though you haven't shot any heavy loads?

Yes, I have confidence in the single lug with this caliber. A careful look over the scope mount in the front, revealed no movement and everything was tight with respect to the torx screws. I think it would be stronger if they had have included a lug in the front. Adding a rail would increase the height of the scope and with this hard kicker, I want my face firmly planted to the stock to lessen getting my eye poked. Not once during the session did I even come close to poking my eye. Great eye relief on this scope.

Dolphin, do all of us a favor and DON"T FEED THE BEARS. That one lug is enough, the only one I saw fail was on a 458 Lott.

If you hunt the big bears, be sure to use a proven bullet. I don't think it's wise to assume that just because it's .458 in diameter that it will therefore kill anything. I say this because I've read reports of dismal performance on African lions with some of the lighter bullets in that caliber, and a brown bear is a lion and then some; maybe two.
