Oh Man!!

You guys need to get your "ranking" system a little better figure'd out in my opinion....
Just because I have asked a bunch of questions and shared a bit of my limited knowlege, duz not mean I'm an Optic's Pro.... LOL .... give me a break!!!

I like coming here to pick member's brains and ocassionally add my 2 cents worth , and I'm thankfull to have a place not overrun with los alamo's type (ballistics numbers crunchers) to converse with.

"Optics Wise" ... I'm not!

And I'd hate for my opinions to be concidered for other than what they are ... opinions...

Thanks.

Who and what is an "Optics Pro" anyways?

Do you know more now then you did before you became a member here? I know I have learned from you and everyone else in here. So in my book you and anyone else who reads and post enough in here can be considered an "Optic Pro". Just wait Knewt 54 more post and you will be an "Optics Master".  What are we going to do then.

"You guys need to get your "ranking" system a little better figure'd out in my opinion.... "

I agree, here is what it is:

OPTICS newbie 0-39 post

OPTICS PRO 40-100 post

OPTICS MASTER 100-

When we started we had no idea we would have so many members in such a short time.  What names do ya'll suggest for the ranking system and how many post should they have to reach that rank.  We can add as many as you can think of.

i actually think that its great jsut how it is now, becuase somebody that has been here for 40 posts, or 100 posts is going to learn as he is here, so by time he has x ammount of posts, he knows enough to suit his rank. just my humble opinion, for what its worth. no what i would like to suggest is a classifieds section, maybe a hunting realated section, and a everything else.

My two cents worth:

Thanks Cris.... It makes me uncomfortable to have a ranking that overstates my knowlege and experience in the optics field.

I am by profession a master carver and designer and builder of very high-end architectural components and furniture. I came up thru the ranks in a guild system and each step in that system was based on real qualifications...

This is what I would suggest:

1-30 posts: Optics Apprentice

31-150 posts: Optics Journeyman

151- and up: Optics Master ( This should be at your staff's discression, as I doubt that even after 151 posts here that I'd concider myself an Optics Master, tho others here certainly may be.)

People who sell optics, and deal with the "state of the art" every day: OPTICS PROFESSIONAL and/or SWFA STAFF

I'd really hate for my opinions to infulence others to make inapproiate purchases simply because you are ranking me with what honestly is an inapproiate title...

I know what I'm a master of and "optics" just isn't on the list.

Thanks for reconcidering my suggestion.

Chris I think it should be a floating system that is based on accurate knowledge rather than the number of post.  You could have the same titles and add a few more.  For example, I am currently an "Optics Master", if I say something really stupid you could knock me down to "Optics Idiot"  and then I would have to build myself back up through the ranks.  Whether or not something is stupid would be completely up to your discression since you own the site.  We could also set rules along the lines of if I reccommend a Zeiss Conquest or Roy pushes the 4200 Elite at any point during a specified time period, then we would drop two levels in the rankings.  I think we sometimes sound like broken records on the brands we hype.  I for one thought I was an "Optics Master"  when I first got on this forum, but I have learned on more than one occassion that I was more of an "Optics Idiot" in many ways.  I enjoy the site and learn a lot from it, not to mention the fact that I get to ramble on without interruption.  Frankly I don't care if we have a ranking system or not, just as long as we keep passing info back and forth.

LOL...

I'm not sure you want to call anyone on here an Optics Idiot... but I get ranburr's drift and have to agree..

Since this is an open catagory I'm going to post a few examples of what I concider myself a master at...

It always upsets me when someone, for one reason or another tries to pass them selves off as something they are not.

And, yes, that's my ugly mug in front of the mahogany entry door....

I concider myself fortunate to be able to call myself a "master" of something.... I'll be more than happy to be an "Optics Journeyman" .... from here on out.... In my eyes, you folks at SWFA are the PROS and ranburr, Dale, Roy, Redneck and the likes are the Masters.... I'll always be learning from ya'all...

And like ranburr said... do we really need to have a rank or a title? I'm sure you must have your reasons...

BTW, i think i would well qualify for optics idiot sometimes, as i miss half of the question, a couple examples: a guy wanted a varmint scope for "anything that moves"  and i said a 6-24. and fine example would be a rings suggestion where i didnt bother to look for an objective size.

The new ranking system seems to be right on the money....I'm hoping after this post my ranking will revert to something more approiate...

I'm not exactly sure how the new system works, but form what I'm seeing...

Optics Grasshopper 0-20

Optics Apprentice 21-99

Optics Journeyman 100-299

Optics Professional 300-999

Optics Master 1000-1999

I know we don't need ranking and titles but its part of the software.  I tried changing people that obviously know what they are talking about to Optics Professional but the software looks at how many post they have and changes them back.

Having had a business that succeeded and failed in my area because I could not get clientele to fork over the money needed to support my carving habits, I must say... Nice work, I wish I could get some of it.  I now drive a truck to support my needs for tools and food.  I have worked at places that made architectural millwork along the lines of those pix, but they were really snooty, and i am not.  Anyway, very nice work.

Members,

Why have any rankings anyway! We are all sportsman and all are opinions should be heard.I have shot all my life and have shot alot of different guns and hundreds of rounds a year so does that make me a expert. Not really.we all need to learn and help each other.

I think the ranking system should be done away with altogether. I think that the sportsman who join the forum with specific questions could read between the lines of the regulars like myself ( Elite 4200 favor ) and others who prefer say Zeiss for example. Everyone who has experience through trial and error, long time hunting buddies experiences with many brands and models will naturally develop an affection for certain products. When I say that I feel that the B&L/Bushnell Elites are the best scopes for the money, I can back that statement with no problem. When Ranburr states that he feels that the Zeiss Conquest is the best bang for the buck, you can be dam sure he can back that statement as well. Both of us recommend other brands and models based on honest experience with them. I look forward to ALL who participate on the forum so that I can assist others and more importantly, learn from others who share their knowledge and experience.

Sometimes it is fun just to go back to the beginning. To see how much change there has been. Who dreamed back at this point in time members would ever reach 13,000 post and more.
