I have an old Ruger 44 mag. carbine I'm setting up to use on deer drives in deep woods, heavy cover. Shots are at moving deer and are normally 20 to 50 yards. My old eyes aren't up to using an open or receiver sight so I'm going to scope it. I really like the VX-R 1.25X4 with the Firedot4 reticle. It's clear, light weight and has the field of view I'm looking for. What concerns me is that it's a 30mm scope and might overwhelm the compact Ruger Carbine. Unfortunately there's no way for me to put the scope and gun together to see how they match up without buying it so I'm looking for some opinions. What do you think?

The difference in "compact feel" between a 1" and 30mm tube is very small. The VXR only weighs 11.5oz, which is pretty close to most other 25mm tubes. Many guys have 30mm Leupold tubes on their levers over on the Marlinowners forums. They look nice and sharp too.
I think the benefits and quality you will receive from the VXR far surpass the slight thickness difference you will see. The VRX I looked at was a very nice peice of gear. I was considering that line for my 30-30, but I just couldn't raise my budget that high. I didn't get a chance to compare the glass under real world conditions, but every review I read was happy about the glass. Also the turrets are fantastic on them. Nice solid clicks that have a sweet metallic click, and the whole thing just looks and feels nice. If you like the features, I would totally sport a 30mm tube on my carbine.

They have pretty good glass. Note quite as good as VX3 but still good. The illumination system is awesome on them.

I just picked up (thanks Skylar!) a VX R 2-7 X 33 for a Ruger Compact. I see zero issues with size / weight on that little rifle. Go for it.

At that distance, I can't think of anything better than the SWFA exclusive 1.5-5X33 VX-R.
I don't understand what you mean by compact feel between 1" and 30mm. It's only 4mm of difference. Personally, I think it will look fantastic and it will supply you with a scope the going to work for a very long time. I wouldn't even think about it. I would go for it.
