Looking to put a scope on a short barrel Savage 308. Will mostly shoot 100 - 300 yards. I have several other Leupolds and have been very satisfied. I also live within 30 minutes of the factory so service (if needed) is easy.

But that said...have read many threads here and am thinking about either

SuperSniper 10X  or the Leupold VX-II 6-18.

A large part of me likes the variable option. I have a 6-18 Burris on a 22-250 and it has served well.

Anyone able to sway my decision.

Thanks in advance.

The vx-11 Leo 6-18 is probably the best kept secret on this web site. It is true "target" grade quality. Additionally it is shorter and lighter than it's contemparies and should work well on your 308. I use one on a CZ 204 american for just these reasons.

Dale -  Thanks for the afirmation of my choice. As I stated, I have a 6 - 18 Burris and I appreciate the power range. Have grown to appreciate Leupold as they are local.

Seems that when I am target shooting I typically set the power between 10 and 12 X .

Wonder if scopes in their mid power range ( e.g. 12 X  in a 6 - 18 power scope) results in better use of the optic quality?

Eric

Well, the lower you set the magnification on your scope the better everything about your scope will get. Better light transmission, better f.o.v., everything. Also, if youre only going to be shooting at less than 300 yards you really dont need anything over 4x to begin with.  Headshots can generally be made with a 4x scope out to 800 yards.  I would seriously consider a much lower power scope in the range of 2.5-10, this is pretty much the best scope in my mind for what you are trying to accomplish, the 2.5 will be perfect for the short range shots and the 10x will take you out to 800 and beyond if you decide to go that route. I think you will be fairly surprised how easy it is to hit your targets with the lower powers, thats just my opinion however.

((((Headshots can generally be made with a 4x scope out to 800 yards.))))

Are we talking about a target gun here?  If so, it's difficult to shoot groups at 100 yds with a 10X scope, much less the feats mentioned above.  Head shots at 800yds?????????   With 4X???????     That's half a mile.  I shoot crows at 200 yds or so at 14X and wish I had more.

That better be one massive sized head.

I change my VXII 6-18x40 target turret, hair dot for a FXIII 12x40 Target turret, leupold dot. Figure why ?.

I was always using 12x 14x magnification,so i pick a fixed with more light, more brightness, sturdier if possible.

(i can't buy ss10x or 16x, due to regulation).
