ok now may be old to some of you but not to me..have always used Leupold but have 0ne Huskema 5x20x50 LR with 30 mm tube with I on a custom made long range..it shoots quite well..the Best of The West Gunsmith that built it told me I could get a good scope that could be calebrated to 7-800 yrds..my other is a 280 AI and i have shot it on paper at out to 800 yards. nice rifle..

ok I have a Savage 110CL I had a custom barrel put on in 280 Rem cal and 25 inch barrel..havent got to shoot it yet as had a back operation in early June..ok now for my questions..

I am thinking on the Leupold VX-3L with CDS...am leaning towards the 50 mm in 4.5x14...my question is do I really need a 30 mm tube or will the 1 inch do ok?..also have looked at the 56 MM front..I am thinking on the L instead of the VX-3 for sake of lower mounting...the prive of scopes thes days I do not want ot by another cuz I picked the wrong one..

have also read that a 3x10x50 will be clearer across the power spectrum and better light also at all powers to 10...is this a fact?..anyway VX-3L 50 mm CDS with one inch tube or the 30 mm tube?..thanks in advance...Rob

30mm tube offers no image or brightness benefit. It could give u more adjustment range and possibly could be stronger than a 1 inch all else being equal.

Persoanlly i like the looks of 30mm tubes better but function wise for a hunting rifle there is no real benefit one way or the other

It will probably be brigher at certain magnications. Plus the internal optical system may be different which could benefit one way or the other. Comparing scopes can be difficult because of mag differences, design differences and such.

yes I am finding it out..according to Leupold the more lenses the less light...so the 3x10x50 would transmit more light than the 4.5x14x50 at say 5X...but i do not feel the 10X would work as good at extended ranges..maybe I should bite the bullet and go with Huskema again....

think what I will end up with is the VX-3L 4.5x14x50 or the 4.5x14x56...it is fun to shoot metal plates at 600-900 yards but would never shoot an animal at that range..

shopping ears a guy out think it is time to go eat lunch and maybe a shot or two since am not in the field..Howdy

Are you open to anything beside Leupolds?  There are a lot of good options available, some that may fit your needs better than a Leupold.
