For the money the Bushnell would be my choice...The others are all fine choices as well, but, I don't see the additional expense being enough to justify the optical upgrade.

For the price the Bushnell will probably be the best  bang for the buck.  Otherwise, I'd go for the Swaro as they have been discounted quite a bit with the Z5 and Z3s coming onto the market.

thats kinda what i was thinking . i just got through finding the best prices on each of these scopes they are as follows: leupold $659, zeiss $699, bushnell $572 & swarovski $849. i also found a sightron big sky with side focus for $600. the swarovski is the pv not the 1" av line . i dont mind spending that much if there is very much differance . whatever i choose is going on a custum 280ai . thanks for the replies i sure am glad i found this forum since i am unable to compare all these scopes

I'd go with the Bushnell.

Leupold has some new FX3 scopes that have "CUSTOM DIAL SYSTEM"  They custom engrave the knob to correspond to the balistics of your caliber and selected bullet.  That would be my choice in the 4.5-14x40 or 50 with the 30mm tube.

the swarovski is very tempting because it is half price and i like the overall size of the scope but i have never looked through the ph or pv i have only looked through the 1" av line . between the swarovski and zeiss which is better . i recently sold a bushnell 6500 4.5-30 i didnt need that much magnification and the scope wasnt that good opticly on the higher powers is the 2.5-16 better ?

i am a little confused.  i assume you are talking  about the american hunter line of S scopes.  regardless, i have never been blown away by their scopes.  the zeiss seems to be the best scope of the lot you have narrowed down, followed by the Bushnell and the Leupold.  But, again, like I always say.  you have to look through the scopes on a rifle that you will be using them on and see which one you like the best.  which one seem to have the easiest eye box and which one is the easiest to adjust in a hunting situation.  you do not want to be fiddling with a scope when it is time to take a shot.  which one has the best eye relief for your rifle and your eyes.  which one do you perceive to have the best resolution for your needs and low light resolution.  which one requires standard bases or requires extended bases for your rifle.  do you need an AO or not.  for the money you are spending, at least in my opinion is alot, you should know the answers to these questions.  do not buy a scope and hope it works for this much money.  for a hundred dollar scope, maybe, but at this level, take your time and make sure it is the right scope for your needs.  good luck and let us know what you got and send some pics.

The Swaro's a step up from the Zeiss Conquest. If you've looked through a Swaro AV then you've basically looked through a PH/PV. The difference is the PH/PV have 30mm tube and FFP.

ok thanks i just remembered i am going out of town next weekend and there is a bass pro shop in the town we are going to so i will look and see what i like . i have never owned a ffp scope but i like the fact that you dont have worry about p.o.i.  changeing and for the magnification im looking at i dont believe the reticle getting bigger will bother me. also the ph/pv has a differant erector than the av dosent it? i have heard some bad things about the av not holding zero. i will let you know what i decide once i am able to compare them . maybe they will have one of the new burris sixx scopes i havent seen any reviews on it yet and i have heard burris are pretty good scopes. thanks  again for the replies

I'm confused also, it was my understanding that the Swarovski AV is the scope that is on sale.  The AH or American Hunter is a Kahles which I own (2) of.  Kahles does not make the AH anymore.  I own a Swarovski, 4-12x42AV.  Plus, I have owned a couple of Bushnell 3000 series and they are good scopes.  I also gave my son's each rifles including (2) 3-9x36 Zeiss conquests which I had used and they are good scopes.  I also have owned several Leupold VX-III's in 2.5-8x36, 3.5-10x40 (also AO) and 4.5-14x40AO.

I personally, based on my experience, would rank these scope as: Swarovski AV-1st, Kahles KX-2nd, Zeiss Conquest-3rd, Leupold VX-III-4th and Bushnell-5th.  I do not have experience with Sightron and will not comment on their product.  The $300. off on the Swarovski AV would be my decision point if I was looking for another scope.  This is despite all being good scopes.

If you are shopping around, there are a few vendors and auction sites that have the PH/PV series with deep discounts as the new Z5 appears to be slated to take it's place.  The FFP reticle is nice, but I personally wouldn't use it beyond 300 yards as the subtensions cover more area.  But I don't plan on too many shots even at that range.

I'd get the Swaro.

having owned THAT Conquest and THAT swaro, get the swaro, the glass is THAT good.

If you need to save a few dollars, the Bushnell is no slouch, and the Conquest is quite good; but if you can find the Swaro at a great price, get it!

I have the swarovski 3x10x42 American with 4A reticle and I like it ALOT, very clear. I also bought the VX-3 yesterday 4.5x14x40 in 1 inch tube. I have another VX-3 coming in the same power and its a 30mm and long range.. Both of the Leo's have the CDS dial, which means I find the exact load that I like in whatever rifle Im using then I give the info to Leo and they make me a dial for the scope for that particular round..

I dig the Swaro's for the glass, very nice. The Leo's VX-3 glass is good but not as bright and clean looking as the Swarovski...I like all the options that Leupold has, they have tons of choices including what there custom shop can do..

Its to bad I cannot have the best of both worlds,, For example I wanted a Swaro but had to buy a Leo because I wanted a gloss scope and they do not make em. Not everybody cares though if they own an expensive rifle in gloss and want to try and match it either but I do. I like my guns/scope to look nice and function equally as well. But thats just me.

Myself , I looked at a 6500 2.5x16 yesterday and loved it, very clear. I wanted to buy it because of that, and the low end(2.5) is very good for shots up close. I would buy the Bushnell for that reason..

The Zeiss has a tad better glass and a tad isn't much... I looked thru both scopes and it gets down to do you like blue or green...

Others have different perceptions of what they see obviously and i certanly am no trained professional!

i agree with RC up there. I would also buy the Swaro if  you do not mind spending the extra dollars. They are great!

I'd get the 6500 and I have had all 3 (and am a big Conquest fan). But for the money the 6500 is very clear and good in low light. My 2.5-16x42 6500 is very clear on 16x . The mil-dot reticule is fine for low light deer hunting. It has tons of eye relief and one of the best features are the resettable turrets.......you can use them like target turrets fairly easily. That's really a lot for the money.

I prefer my 4.5-14x44 Conquest with Target knobs ...........but now a days......your talking a fair amount more than a 6500 !

well i ordered the bushnell 6500 yesterday i found one for $515 including shipping so i couldnt justify spending $385 more when several members have told me how good the bushnell is. i really wanted the swarovski just to be able to say i had one but in the end the extra magnification and overall bang for your $ won out. thanks everyone for the suggestions
