Is the glass the same between VX-3 and MK4 ?  On 200 yd line I was comparing a Mk 4 4.5x14 x50 to my Elite 6500 4.5x30x50mm. Mk 4 was better. But I hate Leupold because they're so over priced !!!!!Loco

No the mk4s don't have the "extended twlight" glass. Leo is revamping its tactical scopes and this may all change. With some of the better scopes out there, they really have a challenge.

Leupold has fooled the American hunters for many years.Leupold has used scope componets made in Asia for many years. However the new VX3 is a nice scope which I compare to the Zeiss Conquest.

I would say no the glass is not the same, and the coatings are different also very subtle differences in the two lines.
The VX3 got a big increase in quality of glass this last year.

The differences between the VX3 line and the Mark 4 line are not always easy to understand. http://swfa.com/Leupold-65-20x50-Mark-4-LRT-30mm-Riflescope-P45057.aspx
Some features that can be had on one model can not be had on the other but it is more than just that.  For example  the VX3 6.5-20x50 has 94 moa  elevation adjustment range where the Mark 4 6.5-20x50 illuminated had 70 moa elevation adjutment range.  Also the Mark 4 6.5-20x50 ERT (extended range tactical) has 70 moa elevation adjustment range where the Mark 4 4.5-14x50 LRT has 100 moa and the Mark 4 4.5-14x50 ERT has only a pathetic 60 moa and it is the "extended range tactical"  So one must search the fine print of the Leupold literature to have some idea what is going on. Obviously there is some significant internal difference in the mechanical adjustments of the Mark 4 compared to the VX3 something that takes up room making the mechanism more sturdy and capeable of less internal adjustment, and or the tube is thicker something is taking up space or it would have the same amount of adjustment.  What scope is right for you depends entirely on how you will use the scope.  Does the Mark 4 have good glass - well its not the best glass out there but it is a lot more useable than most give it credit for being. IOR has some of the most amazing glass I have looked through and I did a side by side comparison of a Mark 4 10x40 M3 next to a 6x42 IOR and was amazed that the IOR was better glass.  The thing about the Mark 4 is that the mechanical adjustments are reliable and repeatable which for a tactical operator is more important than anything else. There are scopes out there that absolutely smoke the Mark 4  like Heinsoldt the tactical zeiss scopes.  There again is goes back to what do you need the scope to do because if you need a lot of internal adjustment you may need a Nightforce or a U.S. Optics scope or if you are on a budget you may need a Super Sniper scope.  But for some guys Leupold is still the right choice and I have a couple of Mark 4s and a VX3  as well as some Bushnells etc  that have served me well. Unfortunately most Bushnells dont have more than about 50 moa of internal adjustment.
If a guy could live with 50 moa I would go Trijicon 5-20x50 illuminated green mildot it is an awesome scope but past about 600 yds it wont have the adjustment my Mark 4 does to get on target.

What is it you are wanting to do that the scopes you have do not already do is there something about the Leupold that you think would work better for you.  Obviously you have spent some money on scopes if you have the IOR and the 6500.  Part of the problem with the 6500 is that you really cant expect to have a fair comparison unless comparing at the same power. 30x anything is not going to look as clear and sharp as 14.5x unless you had an objective the size of a basketball.  If you want really nice glass at a reasonable price the Sightron SIII is also an option but there are special features in  some scopes  that others dont have .  Leupolds bigest selling point is that they stand behind their product while that is IOR s weakest point.
