Getting a new scope for a hunting rifle.  3006 for now, may move to different hunting rifle but it will be a hunting rifle.  looking at the 3.5-10 x 40 size.  The Leupold is around 479.  The conquest is either 3-9x40 or 3.5-10x44 prices are 399 and then a huge jump to 699.  I would like to spend less but I want a pretty good scope for low light deer hunting.  I like the Kahles kx line but can't find them anymore.  You guys got some input for me.  What else should I be considering?
Thanks

I like this one.

I actually owned the 3.5-10x you mentioned, but as you noticed, the prices start to rise after the 3-9x model and the 3-9x would probably serve you just as well.

Best of luck!

Anyone know why they have such a big jump in price on that conquest line?

Two reasons:
1) economies of scale: this is the most popular model
2) loss leader: Zeiss is willing to make less money to this model because it introduces people to the overall quality of the Conquest line and makes them more likely to purchase another configuration at a later point.

If you want, I'll put my Conquest 3.5-10X44 Z- Plex up for sale.
It isn't perfect... has  a very slight ring mark on bottom of tube. It's invisible when mounted and looks like a row of small white dots, and a mark at the forward end of the power indicator (small white spot) where I bumped it against a door. This almost looks like it belongs there.

I've been thinking about selling it for awhile. Would ship for $425. I'll see if I can get some pics and post in the 'Scopes For Sale' section tonight... might have to wait 'til tomorrow.

The 3.5-10x44 will be a better light gatherer than a 40mm will.  In addition, you get those dark contrasting reticles that come in hande in the dark of early morning & late evening.  Another why the Zeiss more is there is more glass (44mm vs 40 mm).

I'd take the 3-9 Conquest and pocket the savings.

Cajun - I would go for the Conquest, because the glass is better. But, to be honest, I like the form factor and the general usability of the VX3 better: the Conquest is 15 oz and 13.5" long, while the VX3 is 12.6 oz and 12.3". And the glass is not incredibly better, it is somewhat better. So I would not say that it is night and day between the two. In fact, if you want to do anything a little custom about the reticle or the turrets, Leupold lets you do that, not Zeiss. You also have more choice in standard reticles with the VX3. If it was not for the glass, I would definitely pick the Leupold.

I guess what I am saying is that while most people here would go for the Conquest, you may not feel the same if you have a chance to compare them - and it would be fine for you to pick either. They are both fine scopes, and you will not regret buying either one.

Agreed.  You could almost buy two of those (3-9x40) for the price of a 3.5-10x44.

I'd go with the 3-9 Conquest over the 3.5-10 model.

As for Leupold vs. Zeiss?  Look through both, hold each up to your rifle, & pick whichever you like.  You really can't go wrong.

I prefer Zeiss, but I'm just a stranger on the internet.  You gotta please your eyes, not mine.

Good Luck!

It might not be a fair comparison but I will be able to compare it with my vx3 that is a 3.5-10x50, and my Kahles which is 3.5-10x50.

Just set them at the same magnification and it will be fair enough. Another way to se the glass difference is to set them with the same exit pupil and look through them and see which one gives you a better image.
