Can't get much info from Leupold's site. Is glass the same, and turrets now 1/4" clicks with VX2; or does the 2 have better glass -  possibly "lead-free"? As you can see, I'm no Leupold expert.

Quantum Optical System, Index Matched Lens system, lead free glass, edge blackened lenses, Diamond Coat. The Leupold catalog uses all the same words for the VX-2 glass that they use for the VX-R.

The VX-1 glass sounds like it's last year's VX-II.

Leupold glass has been getting better they got a lot of bad press for a while for not having as good of glass as a Zeiss Conquest so they have been very good about recognizing customer concerns and have brought out some very innovative scopes in the last few years. What seems to me to be even more important than super duper glass is a means of compensating for trajectory and leupold has introduced their CDS  Custom Dial System low profile target / tactical type adjustable knobs which are custom engraved to match your caliber and ammo selection.   If you need illumination you go VX R if not I think one of the best values in scopes is the FX3 6x42 Long Range Duplex .

I agree with the 6x42 recommendation. I have two of the FX3 versions currently. For some reason, I just really have not been able to warm up to any range compensating reticle whether it be from Leupold, Vortex or whomever.
I still have two Vortex scopes that have that reticle but they are sitting in there boxes for now. I am still hoping I will warm up to it someday. In the meantime, I getting ready to send on one of the 6x42's for a #4 reticle and an M1 elevation turret.

I have not looked through a VX2 scope yet although I would like to. From what I have read the VX-1's now have 92% light transmission while the VX2 now has 94% as well as finger adjustable turrets in addition to the better glass.
