This weekend I decided it was time to check zero on a couple of the rifles I haul around all the time, my Kimber M84 in .260  and my Kimber Pro Varmint in .22-250.  The .260 sports a 2.5-8X36 VX III and the .22-250 holds a Burris Black Diamond 2.5-10X44.  I had never shot these two rifles side by side, and was shocked to see the differences in the scopes.  With the VX III at 8X I could clearly see bullet holes from both rifles at 125 yds.  With the Black Diamond at 10X I could barely see .260 holes and couldn't see .22 at all.  When I put the Black Diamond at 8X I couldn't see any holes.  The VX III Is easily the superior scope.  This made me wonder if my Black Diamond is all it should be, or if my VX III is better than it should be (is there such a thing?).  Anybody else have any experience comparing  a VX III and a Black Diamond?

Very interesting that the Leupold was able to do that with a substantially smaller objective.  Did you try to re-focus the Burris?

Sounds to me like the Burris had dirty lenses or was out of focus.  I have made similar comparisons like you and found the Black Diamonds to be clearer and brighter over the VXIII's!

The Black Diamond lenses are perfectly clean, and it is focused.  I'm wondering if I should send it back to Burris and have it checked out, but the last time I did that I wasn't impressed with their service.

okodude, you would put the Black Diamond's right up there with the Schmidt&Bender?  I have always been impressed with the quality level of the Black Diamonds but never compared them to anything but Leupolds which in my opinion, the Black Diamond's clearly dominate.

If you were a "smart shopper" trying to get the most bang for the buck, do you rate the Black Diamond's a better buy than the Schmidt&Bender's, all things considered?

I think the black diamond is the best bang for the buck.
the schmidt bender and Zeiss are nice but not any where near worth the $1400 vs 500-$600 for the BD

if i had to spend $200 more for the SB i would
but i draw the line about there

If you are going to put a BD on a serious magnum like the 30-378   or 300rum i would suggest the posilock option

Jim & John Lazzeroni only put Schmidt Bender or Burris Black Diamonds on there magnum guns, they have told me that nothing else will hold up

Shon, that's exactly what I'm going to mount it on.................a Mark V Weatherby rechambered to the Lazzeroni .308 Warbird!  I have a Swarovski in a 4-12x50 and I love the glass.....BUT, it just isn't that tough of a scope.  Had a Black Diamond 6-24x50 but traded it off a few years ago; might be time to check out another one!  GOZER!
