I recently had a couple of guns stolen, including my .280 700 Mountain Rifle, with a 2.5-8 Vari-X III.  I will be replacing it with a 700 Mountain Rifle LSS also in  .280.  My questions are:

1.  Should I step up to the 3.5-10x40?  For $80 more, I'd like the extra power, especially at the range.  It doesn't seem that this scope is much larger than the 2.5-8, and would still fit nicely on the Mountain Rifle.

2.  I'm certain that the 2.5-8 will fit in Warne's low mounts.  Will the 3.5-10 also fit in the low rings?  Is there any difference if using the Quick-Detachables?

Thanks for all your thoughts.

I believe the 40mm will fit in the low rings with no problem.  Too bad about your rifle.

I have a model 700 mountain with a Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40 and I am using Warne bases with low rings and there is about 1/4 inch between the scope and the barrel I don't think you will have  any problem at all with a VX-111. Since you are getting a new scope, might I recommend the Zeiss Conquest? I switched out my VX-111 a while back and have never regretted that decision. At $399 it is a far superior product to the VX-111. Glass is better, reticle is WAY better (crisper, clearer, and blacker) and over all sight picture is better, I don't think you would be dissapointed, and it looks GREAT sitting  on top of that mountain rifle!- just a suggestion, Bricat
