I am asking this for my Dad as he is about to buy some new bino's as well.  After reading on here the reviews of the Theron, it sounds almost to good to be true.  I am wondering though, at what point do you find a superior binocular?  IMHO the next step below an Alpha would be like the Vortex Viper, Meopta/Cabela's Euro, and some of the Pentax's.  So what do you all think?

I was accused here awhile ago of being a Vortex basher Smile.  Well this post probably won't help that fella's fellings any.

Having said that, this is from my experience owning the original Viper, both 8x and 10x42, at least having the chance to look through the new Viper HD side by side with the same configuration 10x42 original Viper, and from having had the Theron for long enough to review.

I really do like the new Viper HD.  It is an improvement, if not much, over the original, particularly in the edge sharpness of the two, and side by side the HD is brighter and somewhat sharper than the original Viper.  The new HD is bright, sharp, and clear.  Enough binocular for almost any hunter.

Having said that, it is my opinion that the Theron APO-ED is brighter, sharper, clearer, is sharper at the edge, and has a wider field of view thrown into the bargain (at least at 8x).  The thing is it comes for $200 less, not $200 more than the Viper HD.

Edit:  Build quality is a wash between the two.  Either is tough enough.
Edit 2:  Keep in mind I did NOT have all three side by side at the same time and place.

One thing to keep in mind is my understanding is the Viper warranty is second to none but then again at the price difference it should be.

Good point, anybody that thinks a Vortex style warranty comes without cost is fooling themselves.  I have used Vortex products for years and will continue to do so in the future.  Having used their warranty it is indeed just as good as it is written out, one reason I will probably always have something Vortex.  The next Vortex I am likely to buy is the new Razor HD binocular, but that decision will have to wait for a week ot two until I can get one and have it long enough to form an opinion.

But here's the thing,  every time something like a Zen Ray or a Theron comes out, offering a better optical performance for a particular price, the warranty/service/new company=bad issue is ALWAYS where the counter argument goes.  It is a good point and it is completely natural for that to be brought up and I have no wish to argue against warranty and service.  I just find it interesting that some optical argument with some solid merit seems never to enter the counterpoint.

I sent the gentleman from Theron a message in reponse to a post he mad in another thread reguarding doing a review on his binoculars.  Looks like he could be sending me a pair to reviewYippee AND a spotting scope to review as well Excellent.  If his products are as good as they say they are, i will let as many people know as possible and will definitely result in some purchases from my group.

I am very excited about this!

I tested the Theron for a while, and liked it a lot as well, but I wouldn't say there was a big difference in image between it and the Viper.  I would say it had better depth of field, and a sharper edge.  I would say the Viper has the edge in build quality, but the Theron certainly seemed sturdy.

These two binoculars would make for a great side-by-side comparison.

I have!  I received the THERON WAPITI 8X42 ED HD HIGH DEFINITION BINOCULAR in the mail 2 days ago and finally this evening i was able to spend a little time with them and also my Vortex Viper 10x42. My initial opinions are as follows but I will do an indepth review next week and i am going to get a few other opinions besides just mine Sun-Tues to be able to have more than just one persons opinions on the review and comparison.  The 2 bino's are very close but it does seem the Theron has the edge all the way around.  I really wish they would have been the 10x42 instead of the 8x42 so it would be a more fair comparison as i know the 8x will be brighter than the 10x.  As far as build quality, I dont see where the Vortex is better than the Theron. My first impressions overall of the Theron is it is every bit what you have been hearing. VERY good bino period, and for the money, may be the best value I have came across in optics.  Much more to come, stay tuned.......
