Hi Guys, tried searching for the scope as i am sure its been talked about before but could not come up with anything.  just bought a sako 85 rifle in 308 and they had this scope for 600$ so i told them to include it but can still change my order till Tuesday or Wednesday.  Is this a good scope? i am primarily using this rifl for deer hunting in NY but also would like a nice target scope, if this combo is even possible.  This is the sfp model.  thanks in advance

In my experience two other options in the mid priced range that will provide better optical resolution at the high end of magnification are the SWFA SS 3-15 and the Weaver Tactical 3-15.  I own both and have compared them side by side with the Vortex PST you are considering. Both are FFP, have good functional reticles and the Weaver has locking turrets and an illumination option.

ty, both good for hunting as well?  Sometimes the crosshairs are too thin

I've only used the SS and Weaver Tactical on paper and steel so I don't have an opinion on how suitable the reticles in either would be for hunting.  The Vortex, I believe, is available in FFP and SFP while the SS and Weaver are FFP only if that makes a difference.  I have not hunted with an FFP scope so hopefully someone else will jump in that can comment on your question about and FFP vs SFP for hunting.

If you prefer to hold-over for windage and distance (as apposed to dialing knobs) the FFP are the way to go.  The nice thing is if you suddenly realize you have to much zoom when you zoom out and the reticle spacing stays the same.

If your just bench shooting the SFP scope work just fine.  Most of the time when someone is bench shooting at the range they are using full magnification anyway.

And, I am sure you would be happy with any of the scopes mentioned above.  However, depending on what distance you are hunting at you might not need something as high as 16x.  Vortex has a few lower magnification scopes still in the Viper line for less (you would lose the illumination also), but I think $600 for that scope is a good deal and you can't go wrong with the Viper series.
