Does anyone know if the Vortex Viper 3-9x40 scope will get closeout pricing in the near future since it looks like Vortex has dropped their 1" Viper line?  I need a good 3-9 and would take a Viper if they have a price reduction otherwise I'm looking to try out a Meopta Meopro or Minox ZA3.

I think all the vipers that will be closed out have been also several burris models and the Bushnell 4200 line.  I would strongly recommend the 2-7 Vortex Viper though. I still think the smart choice in scopes it the 3-9x42 Super Sniper because it will do  things the rest wont. You have two choices when it comes to hunting or shooting long range you either use marks like BDC reticles in the scope to hold over or you dial in correction using target / tactical knobs.  Each has its benefit and its disadvantage.  BDC type scopes usually only work at the highest power because the reticle is in the second focal plane. So a 2-7 second focal plane scope with BDC is a good thing because you can still hand hold 7x without a solid rest and still use the BDC marks to get off a quick shot at 300 or 400 yds where you cant do that with a 9x scope typically. Now if a scope is FFP First focal plane the reticle appears to grow from low power small reticle  to highest power large reticle but the the reticle remains exactly in porportion so it can be used at any power. What that means is that the mil dots inside can be used both as a measuring device to determine range of known size targets and also for hold over marks to compensate for trajectory at known distances. In addition since the SS is 1/10 mil clicks and the reticle is in mil's you can use a combination of hold over plus dialing in like 3.4mil hold over you dial .4mil or 4 clicks and hold on the third mil dot down below center.  The really sweet thing about the scope being FFP is that makes the system work at any power so in low light when you need to dial down to 6x to brighen up the image the hold over marks still work the same.   You just cant do that stuff with most scopes.

I have scope of both types and have 2-7 Viper with the BDC reticle already as well.  For the project I'm working on now I just need a good 3-9x40 w/ plex or BDC and I'm trying to stay at or under $300 which is what I can get the scopes listed for.  Considered a 3-9x40 4200 as well but am not a bushnell fan.  I could spemd a little more and get a Conquest but I have some already and want to try something different.

I know this is a VERY late reply but I cannot resist. Check Ebay, gunbroker, and the classifieds here. Before long you'll find an older 3-9 Kahles. I did and it's sweet to get a world class scope for $300. It's ac close to having night vision as possible. DO IT!!
