Ive narrowed my choice for new binos down to 2.

Vortex Talon HD 10x42- http://www.vortexoptics.com/product/vortex-talon-hd-10x42-binocular

vs

Zen Ray ED3 10x43- http://www.zen-ray.com/shop/binoculars/zened3-10x43.html

I really just need some opinions to push me over the edge on a pair of these binos.     i.e.. clarity, brightness.

Thanks,

I have not tried the Talons but I do have one of the Zen ED3 8x43s in my possession. Optically it is their best version yet. Brighter and sharper than the ED2 by a fractional amount. Ergonomics are just a bit different as well with the new rubber armoring. The focusing speed and the feel to the focusing knob also have improved from the ED2 model.

It and the Kruger Caldera are the best of what the Chinese market has to offer today. The optical performance between the two is practically identical with the Caldera having a slightly larger sweet spot. You might want to add the Calera 10x42 to your list.

No.

The Zens/Talons/Calderas are top of the heap in this price range.

No. Not from an optical perspective. In order to get better optics over the models I mentioned you would have to move up into the $1500 or higher range and then you will only see an increase in edge of field performance and a bit of build quality.

It is the distance at which your eye must be within in order to see the full field of view. Higher eye relief is usually better. Though note that we are speaking in millimeters so you shouldn't notice much a difference from 15.2 to 16.

Also note, too, that the field will begin to close in if the distance between your eye and the eyepiece gets to small. But in all, higher relief gives you more range from close to far while still having the full field.
