Am considering a Vortex 6.5-20x44 Viper with "Dead Hold BDC" reticle. For either an HK 630 .223 or a Thompson Center .204. Scope price right now is $399. It's really for the .223, but not sure I will ever be able to find 30 mm rings for that gun, so if I can't I will use on .204.

Main purpose would be pd's at ranges from 200 - 500 yds or coyotes at pretty any range.

Have a couple of questions:

1. Does anyone know if the BDC would be too big on a pd at 500 yds? Would a mil dot be better or worse in that regard?

2. Anyone have any better ideas in that price range - i.e. less than $500 or so?

Thanks.

The viper is a great scope.  I had that scope with the mildot and can tell you soda bottles where hit at 600yds with it.  I haven't used the BDC so I can't comment.  For the price of the Viper its hard to beat.

Thanks - so at 600 yds the mildots didn't cover the bottle up, did it? Also, do you think 20x is enough at 500 yds for a pd? Or would I be better going up to a 30x?

Thanks.

Mirage will be an issue normally pdogging.  most will tell you they dial down around 16 at most because of it.  I think the 20 would be plenty.   No it didnt' cover it up

A mildot is about 3/4 moa. about 4.5 inches at 600 yds at highest magnification on Viper.
The BDC dots are 1/2 moa about 3 inches at 600 yds at highest magnification.

I either would do fine for PD.

So if mirage is an issue, what do people use 32x scopes for? Thanks.

Weather conditions play a big role when shooting p-dogs.  Max magnification for me is 12 to 14x on most days.  Still allows me to have some field of view, p-dogs do move from mound to mound, and keeps mirage manageable.  In early morning you can zoom in more, but I have not found a need.  If you are going to try to get yotes as well, you will cuss a high mag scope if they get in close on you.  I have 1 6-24 and 2 6-18.  They are great for p-dogs, but not as good for yotes that get in close.  My ideal varmint scope would be 3-15.  Good low end and plenty on the top end, but that is me.  For p-dogs the 6.5-20 would be good and would work for the occasional yote.

The $100 version does not have a 30mm tube. It was being phased out but SWFA made it a special.

The regularly priced version has a 30mm tube.

Why not get the V-plex reticle?  It is .1.  You will be better off dialing in your shots than holding over anyway.  p dogs are small and hold over is better used for larger targets.

Plus I would get the 50mm objecive.  It will give you a little more exit pupil which will make the higher mags a little more usable.
