Does anyone have a brief synopsis of how Vortex has gained such a buzz in the optics world in such a short time?  I'm not asking for opinions about the products, I'm just wondering about their place in the industry in general.

There are always plenty of new brands showing up, like Leapers, Hunter Leather, Optronics, VersaPod, Intensity, etc.  Still, Vortex shows up on the scene, & seemingly very quickly has lots of interest and generally favorable coverage from writers, dealers, and users.

It just seems unsual that a newcomer is able to gain any sort of foothold in an industry dominated by a few long-established names (Leupold, Bushnell, Burris), and at a time when so many old names are in decline (Weaver, Redfield).

Why is this?  What have they done that others haven't?

Marketing and manufacturing cost's are low.Vortex is based in the USA,in my area gun stores are doing very well with gun sales which helps promote the sale of affordable scopes and this is where the Vortex is getting a good push. The warranty is excellent and the profit margin is higher than other scopes. The internet is also a very good platform for free advertising. My opinion is the Vortex scope line found a home like the old Weavers and Redfields.Affordable scopes that perform.

I would contend that their success so rapidly has everything to do with their products.

I've bought several Vortex items in the past few months based on recommendations from trusted sources.  I've seen no marketing (other than banners on SWFA) and bought purely on the claimed successes of others.

Good stuff at a good price, lots of great reviews: they beat marketing.

They didn't show up all of a sudden. The company that started the Vortex line (Eagle Optics) has been around for quite a while, and knows how to market. They introduced the Vortex line at the SHOT Show a few years ago, partly by contacting the better-known writers in the business. Then they sent them samples to test. Since Eagle already had wide experience in optics, they knew what was good themselves, along with what price point they should aim for. Then they put the products in the hands of writers (both for print media and the Internet) and started getting the word out. They also spent some money on advertising in the right places.

Since the Vortex products are indeed good products for the price, that word also started getting around. But it didn't occur overnight. It took a combination of smart marketing and good products at least 3 years to get where Vortex is now.

Excellent products, fair prices, great warranties and customer service, and lots of prior experience in the optics biz through Eagle.
