Looking at a viper 6.5x20x44.

Only available in BDC and mil dot......Im not hanging out at 20x mag very often at all. And these silly reticles only work on highest mag.

Looks like Ill have to live with one of em though- can anyone tell me which is more out of the way?

Shooting at targets, steel from 50-500 yards

How about this one, or are you looking at different Vipers.

thats with the 50 objective- they dont make the 44 with the duplex anymore- discontinued.

Id prolly rather live with a reticle vs deal with the added bulk of a larger objective.

Further info shows that the mil reticle actually is set to 14x so that isnt that bad and would be okay for ranging, right?

Just silly that the scope is MOA and the reticle is mils. Dont know if I should go for that.

That is a good scope.  I would get the 50mm objective though, the extra exit pupil will be worth it.

Agreed, the 50mm makes more sense with those magnifications.

hmmmm.....Maybe yous folks are right. Its only 6oz weight difference Ill measure and see if itll be a space issue as its gonna ride 2 guns.

Im almost not against the mil dot though now that I know it works at 14x. Could be fun to learn to range things though I dont know how useful it would be for holdovers considering its an MOA scope.

It will still work for holdovers just fine.  You will just need to have mil data for the reticle and MOA data for the knobs.  Once you have one of them all figured out all it takes is a calculator to figure out the other.  Then just shoot a few rounds and the range to make sure you did it right.

IMO it is a lot simpler and way more accurate to just use a rangefinder.  Everyone always says they want to learn to range with a reticle.  It is tough and if you are not doing it every day I doubt one could keep the skill up.  It is difficult because in reality you have no idea what the size of the target is you are trying to range.  You can guess, but even small errors can cause a miss.
