I have searched for a scope for a year now, and just haven't been able to bring myself to buy one. I finally have an excuse to get one as I got a new muzzle loader for Christmas. I'm swapping my 3-9x40 Fullfield II from my hunting rifle to the muzzle loader and need a scope to replace it. I really wanted 12x zoom as opposed to 9x and planned on getting a 4-12x40 Vortex Diamondback (after reading Koskins "inexpensive scope comparison" and hearing about their excellent customer service). However, I found that the Sightron SII Big Sky 3.5-10x42 is $200 after a mail in rebate, making it only $20 or so more than the Diamondback. Will there be a big difference between 10x and 12x zoom? And will there be a big step up in optics from the Diamondback to the Big Sky? I have not had the privilege to look through either scope. Thanks guys!

The Big Sky is a significant step up over the Diamondback which will be similar to you FFII. I had a 4-12 D-back (as well as numerous FFII) and it was cretinally a good quality scope but had nowhere near the clarity of the Big Sky. I have 3-9, 3-12, and 24x Big sky models and they are very good. As for 10 v 12x. The Big sky on 10x should be plenty unless you are shooting small critters or beyond 600yds. Even then there is still an argument to be made for less is more in terms of magnification.

The Big Sky will put you in the Vortex Viper series (it may be a bit better in fact).  As far as magnification goes a scope with higher quality optics will usually out perform a lesser quality one of higher magnification.

Thanks for the replies everyone, I guess I'll go with the big sky. Just wanted to make sure it was a wise choice without being able to look through either scope.

You made a great choice.  I was trying to make nearly the same decision a week ago between the Vortex Diamondback 3x9x40 and the Sightron Big Sky 3.5x10x42. I was also swayed to Vortex after reading Koshkin's "inexpensive scope comparison".  Members on this board recommended the Sightron.  I compared both scopes when I went to the SWFA store.  There is nothing wrong with the Diamondback.  However, the Sightron is better quality at the Big Sky level.  You got a great deal on the Sightron at $199 after rebate.  A week ago the cost was $249 after rebate.

BTW, Koskin reviews scopes and scope brands at the following site: http://opticsthoughts.com/index.php
