I need a "meat & potatoes" scope for a budget priced woods rifle.  I'm almost persuaded to get a Vortex Diamondback 4-12x40 with the Dead Hold BDC after reading a very good review of inexpensive scopes by your own DLO.  However, the review was for the 3-9 version and it's several years old.

Can anyone tell me if the Diamondback 4-12x40 will be the optical equivalent of the Diamondback 3-9x40?

Is there a better scope I should consider in the $200-$225 price range in a similar power range?

Thanks,

p.s.  Great Forum

4-12x40 is a bit much for a 'woods' rifle.  A good 2-7 or 2.5-8 or the 3-9x40 you mention would be more appropriate imo.

and if you are hunting in woods and want to find your target in the scope, do yourself a favor and keep the scope on LOW power, more like 3.5x or such.

You guys are right and I misspoke in my first post.  This will be more of a general hunting rifle, probably used most out of a stand or off my back deck at medium to long range.  I'm also hoping that the scopes 32.4' FOV won't be too much of a handicap at closer range.

Thanks

That's a pretty generous FOV for a 4-12.  Should suit your intended purpose just fine.
