I wonder if the vortex people realize they can grab a much greater market share if they will slightly improve resolution and low light performance along with curing the white out problems occurring from excess sunlight in the hs and pst lines. They have made a great scope mechanically that underperformes just enough optically to lose many sales that could be their's.

Is it a case of bean counters preventing success or the inability of the oem manufacturer to provide slightly better for a modest price or at all?

Every scope is a compromise of performance vs. price...I mean if they don't make money, then they aren't going to be around for long. And glass is usually the most expensive aspect.
So if you don't give a bit on the glass, then the engineering and machining goes way down. Then you are left with a scope that "looks" superb, but doesn't track or retain zero...But all this is just my opinion, and observation...

ugapaul,

Have you seen the newest models?  The optical performance is very good, and very competitive with the competition at their pricepoint.  It seems Vortex has been doing their best to improve the lines with each shipment.

Vortex is having a hard time keeping up with orders, particularly the Viper HS LR and PST lines.  I am in the market for a HS LR myself, but unfortunately SWFA is waiting to get more in.  ugupaul, I would particluarly have you check out the newest 4-16X50 models in both lines.  I think they are pretty nice.

It looks like they are changing the magnification rings as well on the newest ones.

Sadly with the global market and parts changing from month to month buying a scope is a grab bag
especially if you cannot look through it before purchase, also very difficult to rely on web research.

I've been looking at the 3-9 x 40 Viper and the 2.5-10 x44 Viper HS.  Aside from the additional field of view with the HS and slight increase in magnification, is the HS really worth the extra money?  It weighs 4 oz more too.  What additional benefits does the HS provide?

Thanks,
Mike
