When I was a kid my Grandfather had a .270 rifle with one of the wideview Redfield scopes. It was a great combination. I recently decided to look on eBay for any of these old scopes and come to find out, they are plentiful - but the usually bring a hefty sum of money.
What are your opinions on buying one of these old scopes versus buying a new one, say for about the same price?

You could get a much better scope for the price if you bought a modern day optic. That said, I as well as others just like the classic scopes for the nostalgia effect. You just have to decide if you'd rather have that, or a better scope for the same money. On my main hunting rifle, I'd go with something newer. On my backup, that's where I'd put something like this.

This is all just my opinion, and I'm sure as always, some will agree, and some will disagree.

Had an El Paso Weaver cost me a shot.  A setting sun behind the deer caused the scope's image to white out.

I love the old Redfields and I would go for it if that's what you want to do. As long as the scope holds zero and you can see through it, it won't cause a problem.  I still use a Widefield  on occasion.

Check local gunshows, prices are normally better than Ebay.
