I recently inherited a nearly mint Remington Model 34 bolt 22 rimfire from the 1930’s. While it has little collector value, it did belong to an uncle of mine that I was close to. Therefore, I would like to return it to squirrel hunting service after almost 60 years in his closet. My thought was to have it drilled and tapped for Weaver bases and then scope it in as close to a “period correct” scope as is practical. Do you folks have any suggestions as to what kind of scope I should be looking for? Thanks…

EDIT: One of the curious things about sites like this is that you always get answers to questions you did not ask. Odd.

I would leave it alone but the weaver K 4 is a good peroid scope and a lot of them are available the good used ones are about $ 75 that I have seen but a good set of open sights are hard to beat on a 22. Time you get a gunsmith to drill and tap and buy a compatable base and rings & scope you will have another 2 or 3 hundred in the rifle.

A rifle of that model & vintage has little collector value unless it is NIB. What you do depends on your budget.
To just make it a useful hunting rifle a Weaver 60 series K6 (1950s) would make a nice rig.
If you want real authenticity and quality a Lyman Alaskan (7/8" tube) (1940-50s) would be nice and not overpower the look and balance. If you have deep pockets a Unertl 3/4" tube small game would be the ultimate choice.
You would only have to drill 2 holes as there are scope blocks with dovetail bottoms that would fit in the existing rear sight slot.
Were it mine, I'd hang it on the wall and shoot it with the iron sights. Go out and buy a medium price quality 22 like a savage or marlin and put a modern scope on it. The whole rig would cost less than the Unertl.
Enjoy!
