Hi everyone, new guy here with some questions if you all don't mind.

Before I say anymore, I did try the search feature here but had no luck.

I recently came into possession of a vintage Lyman Super Target Spot scope in 20x that I have mounted on my M 1917 Eddystone.  My Eddystone was sporterized, it appears, back in the 1950's or 60's and set up as a target rifle.  It has the scope bases in front of the receiver.

My question is, how do you use this darn scope?  I am familiar with regular hunting scopes but this thing is a beast!!!  Is there anyplace online, etc. to find copies of the original manual?  I have been looking on evilbay but with no luck.

My very good friend gave me the scope saying, "pay me when you can" (I call him my "surrogate father") when he saw my Eddystone and told me that it was set up as a target rifle.  He had shot competitive smallbore back in the late 60's and early 70's but it had been sitting under his bed in its box for over 20 years.

Also, is there a way to look up its serial number?

Anyway, thank you all for your time and help with my "new" scope.  It is much appreciated!

Mike

Mike,
First, let me say, you REALLY stumbled onto something here.   Lyman Super Targetspot Scope is, well....it just don't get much better, unless you enlist Carl Ziess into the picture.
This scope is adjusted externally.  Meaning that the mount rings have adjustment, the scope has no adjustment other than optically for your eyesight with respect to target picture.  Therefore, it absolutely must be set to the rifle with blocks and a really good external bore scope.  Either that or take a coupe of bricks of ammo and a whole bunch of varying thickness blocks to a range for a week and try and figure it out.  By the way, that scope, in great shape is worth between 5 and 9 HUNDRED dollars.

Thanks for the replies guys, I appreciate it!

I did find a place (Parsons Scopes) that had copies of the manual so I ordered one.  I played with the scope today after getting the manual and was able to get it to focus somewhat better than what it was previously.  Got to get some ammo now and test it.

One more question though, how do you set the front ring to keep the scope from hitting your eye when you fire?  There is an adjustable ring that slides forward and backwards.  Since I am shooting a 30-06 with this scope, its kind of important.  No black eyes!

Thanks!

Good morning. I may be interested in your Lyman Scope.
I have a dilemma: I have two M-52 Winchesters set up
to use this scope, but only one, Lyman SuperTargetspot.
I want to leave these rifles to my two sons, but feel the
need to be fair. In the event that your scope is available,
in its box, and in the mint condition you indicated, would
you be interested in selling it? It's a nostalgia thing, and a
fairness thing. Please feel free to contact me at
edbachner@gmail.com. Many thanx.

Move the stop ring forward out of contact. Slide the scope to suit your head positon on the stock.  Then set the stop ring to fix at that positon.  When the rifle recoils the gun comes back while the scope stays in position.  Which increases the distance between your eye and the scopes rear.  Push the scope back against the stop ring to come back to the proper setting.  All it does is index the scope the way you want.  Scope itself slides free forward on recoil.
