Just received my Aimpoint CompC3 with the 2 MOA dot and have a quick question. Upon opening the package I followed the instructions (as provided) but before mounting the unit I turned it on to see the dot and much to my surprise found the following. Instead of a crisp red dot I see what appears to be a cluster of red dots (resembles a bunch of grapes) with a spot missing at the 2 o'clock position and secondly the units' red dot doesn't appear until I reach the 5th position on the adjustable rheostat control. Could this be the function of a weak battery or does anyone else have any suggestions ?? I have purchased numerous products from SWFA and I'll contact them directly just wondering if this has occurred before and was attributable to the battery ??

Thanks'

Not unusual for it to take 5 or 6 clicks to start seeing the dot - even the models that are not for night vision seem to work for it.  The grape cluster thing has me worried though. You can get flare from turning the dot up too much but you should be able to regualte the dots intensity very nicely. I like trijicon better but aimpoints should be good solid optics.

How does it look when you co-witness with your irons?  Also, how does the reticle look when you use your other eye?

Yak,

I never to bother to even mount the unit, surely mounting the unit wouldn't have changed the dot. I've seen other less expensive sights and the reticle was fine a nice crisp dot this unit has a clucter of what looks like individual strands of fiber optics, called SWFA customer service today and they asked me to send it back.  I was hoping someone had a better explanation as to what may be causing this, I was turely trying to avoid the delay.

The rheostat on Aimpoint sights takes the dot from one extreme to the other to ensure a setting is available for any lighting condition. Not seeing the dot under normal lighting conditions on the first several settings is absolutely normal, as is ‘blooming’ at the high end when in low light.

Copied from http://www.aimpoint.com/faq

The dot in my Aimpoint sight doesn't look round. Is it defective?

If your dot does not appear to be perfectly round, the distortion is probably caused by the way that your eye perceives the dot, rather than by some mechanical defect. Due to differences in the lenses in different individuals' eyes, round objects that subtend areas near 3 minutes of angle may appear distorted in a variety of ways depending on the individual and other environmental influences. Inexpensive red dot sights sometimes have manufacturing defects that can cause the dot to be an odd shape.

A simple test that can be easily performed will allow you to determine the cause of the apparent distortion:

Turn the sight on and look through as you normally would. (This test is easiest when the sight is not mounted on a firearm, but can be performed with the sight mounted as well. Just make sure that the firearm is unloaded and pointed in a safe direction.)

While continuing to look through the sight, roll the sight on its optical axis.

If the dot's irregularities seem to revolve around the center of the dot like the spokes of a wheel, there is a mechanical defect causing the distortion.

If the dot does not roll with the sight, the distortion is caused in the way your eye perceives the dot. This is not to say that you don't have good vision. You can see clearly and still see a distortion in objects this small.

This effect is less pronounced in sights with larger dots. More people will see the dot in a sight with a 10 minute-of-angle dot as being perfectly round than will be able to see a 3 MOA dot as round.

Does that Aimpoint have 11 brightness settings like an M2? I've only used NV compatable Aimpoints, so I don't know how a non NV optic works. I assume Ufriend has it right.

And the dot looks like a "cluster of grapes" on the 6th or 7th setting too? Somethings weird here.

Welcome To Optics Talk. I do hope this deal gets ironed out.

Thats not what Im saying.  For many of us looking through the BUIS and at the dot of the RDS tends to "tighten" the dot up so to speak.  But since your sending it back...  Also, how does the dot look when you look through your AP with your non-dom eye?

P.S. Welcome to the OT! Smile

Yak,

I meant no disrespect in my reply to you, I was just saying that it didn't make sense to mount the unit with the problem that I was experiencing, now for the good news I changed out the battery with a fresh duracell and lo and behold the problem went away Big Grin.  I would like to thank all of you who took the time to answer the questions that I had and I'd especially like to thank Chris for his response and the Customer Service department for their time in making this a pleasurable experience (everything worked out by just replacing the battery). Having worked in retail for over 25 years I was pleasantly surprised by the way I was treated Big Smile Kudos to Chris and everyone at SWFA.
