I'm looking at this scope and wondered if anyone had feedback on its use for hunting and targets at moderate ranges (<600 yd). It will be primarily for hunting with a fairly light mountain rifle. The one I'm looking at has ASV turrets and an RZ 800 reticle. I know its reputation for quality lowlight performance. My main concern with it is bulk and weight. I guess I'm mainly looking for your experience in the field. Thanks

Have a 56 HT, but almost no hunting experience with it yet.  Would also like to hear experiences of others.

They are fantastic scopes, as you'd expect from Zeiss's flagship series...but if you're trying to maintain the "light mountain rifle" theme, I personally wouldn't select a 3-12X56 with ASV turrets as my first choice for that rifle, but that's just me.

I've personally never encountered a situation where I really needed more than 10X on a big game hunting rifle, and really, even 6X is plenty. Maybe I'm "old school." I've never subscribed to the "more is better" view, and I personally can't stand the ASV turret. If I want to spin turrets, I'd select a good MIL based turret with 1/10 mil clicks. I don't like any of the specialized BDC turrets that atttempt to merge ballistics with prescribed drop values, as those values are only ever valid at one combination of altitude, temp, bullet weight, velocity, etc., whereas a plain ol' MIL or MOA turret can be used with any condition, with any bullet and any velocity when paired with a good ballistic app and LRF.

I agree with you about bdc, I plan to use the ASV turret with a standard 0.1 mil graduated ring. I like the locking turret design.
