What's the difference in the Leupold Var-X III 4.5-14x50 and the Long Range version?  I can see that the Long Range model is side focus.  However, it appears that the normal one does not have an adjustable parralax.  I like the simplicity but is this a handicap?  Please explain.

For varminting yes it is a handicap if you will be making long range shots at small varmints.  You would only want the none AO scope if you were hunting larger game and your shots weren't going to be extremely far away.  At least thats my opinion.  But when Leupold says long range they mean it, I think the closted it will focus is 75 yards.  The other main difference is that the Long Range model is a 30mm scope and the other is only a 1" scope.

The 30mm tube and the side focus are what make the scope "long range''. Larger tube = more adjustments for long range shots. Then you have the side focus to take care of the parallax problem you run into from the increased distance.
